Today, very few people would defend the institution of slavery. We take for granted that owning people is an evil, immoral practice. Why, then, should anybody bother to read the Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass? Slavery was wrong; slavery was awful; most importantly, slavery was abolished in the United States in 1865. Can’t we just forget about it? Just forgetting about it sounds tempting. Slavery isn’t a pleasant subject to think about. If you’re African American yourself, it probably angers you to think that your ancestors may have been held in slavery. If you are white, you may resent feeling blamed for something that happened long before you were born. Whoever you are, you might tend to think, “Let’s focus on the future, not the past. It’s time to move on.” Introductions answer the questions… What’s interesting about this topic (the hook)? What is the author writing about? (the main idea) What issues/reasons will the author explain?
22
Instead of seeing our common humanity, we focus on our different skin colors, religion, levels of educations, dates of arrival in this country, sexual orientations, or languages. We reserve our concern and humane treatment for people who are “like us.” We need the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass as much today as when it was published in 1845, to remind us of the infinite worth of every human being. Conclusions answer the questions… What was the main idea? What is interesting or important about this issue? Why should anyone should care?

Example 2 - Advanced RAPT Response Education in the hands of a slave was dangerous because of the simple fact that they have been deprived of it. Once they obtained it, there would be no stopping them, making them “unmanageable.” Therefore, white men were fearful that one day they would become inferior, so they kept slaves ignorant. As Douglass noted about white men’s fear, if they gave “an inch [a slave would take]…a mile.”

Example 3 - Advanced RAPT Response Slaves would “be of no value” to their masters if they learned to read and write because they would become smarter than the masters and learn how to fight back with knowledge. Slaves “will become discontent” with their lives, Frederick overheard Mr. Auld say. Slaves were told to believe that they were meant only for work, not to learn and fight for their freedom.
