3. Kwashiorkor (5 W’s) What is it? Deficiency of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, results in protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) or protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). Literal translation, first-second Children lack daily energy and body doesn’t function properly; become very ill or die Other symptoms include: dermatitis (skin disease), changes in pigmentation, hair discoloration and thinning are all seen frequently Full growth will never be achieved May leave children w/ mental and physical disabilities
