TRANSITION TO COMMON CORE STANDARDS 3 Shifts to Common Core Include: Building knowledge through Content- Rich nonfiction Reading and writing grounded in evidence Regular practice with complex texts and academic language

R EADING /W RITING Reading –literature book, novels and Scope magazine 6 +1 writing traits – common vocabulary, self assessment, peer assessment Writing Genres – narrative, informational, response to literature, argumentative

ACCELERATED READER (AR) Students will be taking the STAR test and will be given a ZPD ZPD tells them the level of books they need to check out Make sure you sign their reading logs (available on my website under language arts) Once they finish the book, they can take a test in my class or the library ONLY if they have a signed log. We go to the library on Fridays.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING Most units have projects Projects are done in class, if they don’t finish it’s homework Calendars with due dates/test dates are available on my website Small quizzes throughout unit Cumulative test at end of unit Aligned to Common Core Standards

A SSESSMENTS Diagnostic Formative 10% of standard percentage Summative 90% of standard percentage, except for LA where it is worth 80% AR is worth 10% of Language Arts’ Grade Aligned to Common Core Standards

H OMEWORK AR/silent reading (check in with your child) sign log Extensions of class work

A SSIGNMENT P OLICY Formative late assignments will not receive credit! If your child is absent then they can make up the assignments that they missed. It is their responsibility to check with me.

To check how many AR points your child currently has. Login information coming soon! You can sign up to receive emails showing your child's quiz or test results!!

GRADEBOOK FAQ What does a ‘Z’ mean in my child’s grades? It means the assignment wasn’t turned in, completed, or your child did not write their name on it. Have student check the no- name box. What does a “X” mean in my child’s grades? It means that your child is excused from that assignment and it will not affect their grade.

Intervention Mathematics or English-Language Arts Support for meeting academic proficiency in one or both of these areas. Placed based upon assessments given by teacher or state test scores.

Enrichment Students who are meeting grade level standards in math and language arts. Enrichment provided based on content areas and teacher.

Changing Classes Classes can change throughout the year. Assessments given to determine movement.
