3 The Analytical Paragraph - GRADING 11 points total 1 POINT FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING: – Title correctly punctuated – First and last name of poet – Last name of poet after first mention – Thesis includes WHAT the poet did – Thesis includes HOW the poet did it – Specific quote inserted x 2 – Quote explained in your own words x 2 – Statement showing the relationship between the quote and the thesis x 2

4 Thesis Statements In “Auto Wreck” by Karl Shapiro, Shapiro – uses different literary devices to describe the horrific aftermath of an auto wreck. – describes how horrific and gruesome a car crash can be by using imagery and hyperbole. – writes about a car crash. – uses diction and tone to show a car crash.

5 Specific Examples Shapiro describes, “Our throats were tight as tourniquets,” comparing how shocked the witnesses were to see the wreck. – Shapiro describes the throats of the witnesses as “tight as tourniquets,” comparing a tourniquet, which cuts off blood, to the stunned nature of the witnesses. It is as if their oxygen supply had been cut off.

6 Specific Example He describes the ambulance as “the ambulance at top speed floating down,” it shows the urgency of the ambulance. – He describes the ambulance as “floating down” the road. The idea that the ambulance is “floating” rather than driving as one would explect shows the surrealistic setting of the car crash.
