Secondary National Strategy Science © Crown copyright 2005 3 Outcomes SLs will recognise that: skills developed in teaching science in KS3 will be useful and required when teaching GCSE science. effective teaching of Scientific Enquiry in KS3 will lead well into teaching How Science Works at KS4 but there are also aspects which are new. there are examples of teaching How Science works which can be used to support teachers in KS4.

Secondary National Strategy Science © Crown copyright 2005 4 Task 1; Progression from KS3 to KS4 Work in pairs Find the set of cards which have the statements from handout 4.3 (the PoS for KS4 How Science Works) Match each card statement with appropriate statement(s) from the KS3 PoS for Scientific Enquiry on handout 4.2. Place each card in the most sensible position on the handout You may need to use the marker pen to indicate lines of progression When you are satisfied with your arrangement glue the cards in place

Work in pairs Look at handout KS4.4 which contains two scientific enquiry questions from the 2005 Key Stage 3 science test Identify and record what pupils should have been taught for them to answer these questions. Identify as many elements of scientific enquiry as you can Join with other pairs to share your ideas Optional activity Look back at the outcome sheet from Task 1. How much of How Science Works would a pupil have mastered if they could successfully answer these questions?
