Verse 1 Sanjaya uvaca tam tatha krpayavistam asrupurna-kuleksanam visidantamidam vakyam uvaca madhusudanah Sanjaya Said Krishna Overwhelmed by compassion Whose eyes were filled with tears and showed distress To Him As was said One who is sad thissaidsentence

Verse 2 kutas tva kasamalam idam visame samupasthitam anarya-justam a-svargyam akirti-karam arjuna Sri Bhagavan (Lord) Said sri bhagavan uvaca in this crisis unbecoming of an upright man from where this not the way to heaven does not add to your good name Arjuna upon youdespair has come

Verse 2 Verse 2 synopsis: In such crisis, from where has this despair come upon you, O Arjuna? It is not at all becoming to an upright man, and does not add to your good name. Nor is it the way to heaven. Krishna admonishes Arjuna.

Verse 3 klaibyam ma sma gamah partha na itat tvayi upapadyate ksudram hrdaya daurbalayam tyaktva uttistha parantapa do not yield to unmanliness arjuna notthis in youbefit give uplowly weakness of heart get uparjuna

Verse 3 Verse 3 synopsis: Krishna urges Arjuna to stand up and fight. Do not yield to unmanliness, O Partha! It does not befit you. Give up this lowly weakness of heart and get up, Arjuna!

Verse 4 katham bhismam aham sankhye dronam ca madhusudana Isubhih pratiyotsyami pujarhav arisudana Arjuna Said arjuna uvaca how I will fight against Bhishma andDrona in this battle Krishna with arrows these two who are worthy of worship destroyer of foes (Krishna)

Verse 4 Verse 4 synopsis: Arjuna attempts to explain his reasons to Krishna. How will I fight against Bhishma and Drona in the battle, O Krishna? These two are worthy of my worship alone.

Verse 5 gurun ahatva hi maha anubhavan sreyo bhoktum bhaiksyam api iha loke hatva arthakaman tu gurun iha eva bhunjiya bhogan rudhira pradigdhan better to eat collecting food from others even here worldindeed teachers highly exalted not kill whereas hereeven teachers kill enjoyment would experience security and pleasure stained with blood

Verse 5 Verse 5 synopsis: Arjuna continues to explain his reasons to Krishna. It would be better indeed to eat food collected from others here, in this world, than to kill these highly exalted teachers. Whereas, if I kill them, the enjoyments of security and pleasure I would experience in this world, will be stained by blood.
