4 Rationale and Goals Our school has used only Direct Instruction for Reading until this year. Students are strong at decoding, but struggle greatly with comprehension. Teachers will be able to integrate researched based best practices for comprehension instruction into their classrooms. Teachers will study, practice and reflect on effective comprehension instruction.

7 Base Groups Share your data, information and writing samples from your Read-Write- Talk activity with your students Identify any common themes or trends What student successes do you observe? Challenges? What did you do help students be successful?

8 Model of Shared Reading Observe example of shared reading of “Ramona the Brave” Take notes on what you notice

9 Discussion Questions What did you see happening? What purpose does a shared reading have? Where could it be used in your classroom?

10 Shared Reading Read Fisher article and complete information web organizer with key ideas In base groups create poster of web of key ideas and understandings Be ready to share your poster with whole group

11 Break- 15 Minutes Stretch Snacks

12 Planning Time Use the text you are using in your reading instruction Use post-its to plan for a 1-2 page shared reading example –What will you say? –What do you want to emphasize? –How will you help students “hear” your thinking?

13 Sharing Volunteers to practice what they planned by sharing with the group?

14 Break- 10 Minutes Stretch Snacks

15 Think-Pair-Share Think: Use graphic organizer to summarize new and key understandings Pair: Compare your graphic organizer with your partners Share: Key points from you and your partner with the whole group

17 Assignment Complete shared reading planned today in class. Videotape a think aloud to share with the group. Be prepared to share your video in the next session and to participate in completing “Video Sharing Protocol”
