3 The FAO exists to increase food supplies throughout the world and to prevent world hunger. They do this by improving farming and fishing methods. The FAO is also the most important supplier of emergency food aid, in the event of famine and drought. Introduction Politics of Aid 12

4 The Street Food Project One of the projects supported by the FAO to improve the diet of people in developing countries is “Street Food”. Hot and cold foods are sold from open-air food stalls. Politics of Aid 12 The FAO helped set up projects to improve water supply, garbage disposal facilities and the personal hygiene of the vendor.

6 Cash Crops Cash crops are grown, not to feed the people, but to make money. In Ethiopia, cotton is a cash crop. Much of the land is used to grow cotton. These crops are then sold to pay off the country’s debt. Developing countries often use so much land for cash crops, such as cocoa, coffee, tea and cotton, that it is difficult for them to provide food for the people. Politics of Aid 12
