Getting Started Civ89 is a game of military, technological, and economic conquest played with two people, identified by the colors black and gray, on one TI-89, TI-89 Titanium, TI-92 plus, or Voyage 200 calculator Game files must be in the main folder Only the program files (civ89, zciv89) may be archived Before playing, back up all important data to a computer. While I have done my best to ensure that this program will not harm your calculator, it is possible that your calculator will crash while running Civ89, as with all games of such complexity

Getting Started The title screen has two options: start a new game and load a saved game Loading a game: –Select “Load Game” and use ↑ and ↓ to select the file to load

Getting Started Starting a new game: –Select “New Game” –Set game options, using +, –, and/or the number keys to change each digit and the letter keys to enter player names –Set the scenario file –Set the starting units –Set the map file

Your Empire, an Overview Your empire consists of units, cities, and some amount of gold Main functions of units: –Offense –Defense –Construction –Mining Main functions of cities: –Protection –Production of units Cities:

Military Selecting a unit: –First, select its space on the map: Using ↑, ↓, ←, →, and/or 2nd or ♦ plus a direction, find the space on the play screen Press ENTER –If necessary, use ↑ and ↓ to scroll through other units and cities at that space, then press ENTER –Alternatively, use ←, →, 2nd or ♦ plus a direction, and/or the letter keys, or press “n” to activate the next unit

Military Selecting a unit will give detailed information about the unit Press “h” for more information about the unit

Military Hit points: –Each unit has a set number of hit points –When the unit is attacked, it loses hit points –When the unit reaches 0 hit points, it is destroyed –Recovering health: Press “r” or “s” to use the selected unit’s remaining movement points to recover health Alternatively, wait until the end of your turn, when units will rest automatically

Military Moving: –To move a unit, select it, then press an arrow key in the direction you want to move –The unit will lose 1 movement point (with some exceptions explained later) and will move one space in that direction –Limits to movement: Ground units can only travel on land spaces Water units can only travel through water spaces, river spaces, and cities Air and high air units can use any space for travel Water spaces: River spaces:

Military Tip: press MODE to see movement points on the map screen instead of a health bar Limitations: –There can be no more than 10 units in a space without a city and 25 units in a space with a city –Each player is limited to 50 cities and 300 units total –Units from only one player can occupy any given space

Military How to attack: –Move adjacent to an enemy unit –Press the direction of the enemy unit

Military The effects of attacking: –Attacking costs 1 movement point –Units can only attack once per turn –Different unit types have different attack powers against ground and water units, air units, and high air units –Some units have a blast radius, allowing them to attack units at several spaces at once –Some units self-destruct after attacking –Damage is partially random

Military Defending: –The unit most likely to survive is selected to defend each space –If the defending unit is destroyed… If it is not in a city, all other units at that space are also destroyed If it is in a city, only it is destroyed

Military Building and buying units: –Each city can produce units –Selecting a city: Go to the city’s space on the map Press ENTER to select the space If necessary, press ENTER again to select the city You can also press “c” to activate the next city

Military Building and buying units: –Changing a city’s production: Select the city Use ↑ and ↓ to scroll through available options, then press ENTER You can also use ←, →, 2nd or ♦ plus a direction, and/or the letter keys

Military Building and buying units: –Buying units: Select a city and change its production to the desired unit Select the city again and choose the “Buy” option The unit will be produced at the beginning of the next turn

Military Building and buying units: –In addition to units, cities can work on two other tasks: “Mining” adds gold to your empire “Science” increases a city’s scientific output (science is explained in detail later) –Some units will assist a city’s production if they end a turn in that city

Military Transport units: –Some units can transport other units –The types of units they can transport are some combination of ground, water, air, and high air, depending on the unit –Moving a transport units moves all the units it is carrying –Boarded units cannot attack or defend –Boarding a transport unit: Select the unit to be boarded Locate on the right side of the screen where it says “Board” Press the F key indicated there

Military Transport units: –Another way to board: Select a ground unit Press the direction of an adjacent transport unit that is on a water space –There are three ways to release boarded units: Select a unit and press the F key next to “Exit”, OR Select a unit and press an arrow key to move it, OR Select a transport unit and press the F key for “Releas”

Military Bombs: –Bombs are special units that cannot move outside of an air-based bomber unit –There are four ways to detonate a bomb: Select the bomb and press the F key for “Detnate” Select the bomb and press a direction to detonate it one space in that direction Select the bomber and press the direction of an adjacent enemy unit Select the bomber and press the F key for “Releas”

Technology Your empire is researching one technology at any given time New technological advances allow you to make new units and can give your empire other benefits A technology can only be researched if all of its prerequisites have been researched

Technology When you finish researching a technology, the game will ask which technology to research next. When this happens… –Use ↑ and ↓ to scroll through available technologies, then press ENTER –You can also use ←, →, 2nd or ♦ plus a direction, and/or the letter keys

Technology The goal seek feature will tell you what to research next if you want to reach a particular technology Speed of research: –The more cities you have, the faster you will research a new technology –Changing a city to “Science” increases its scientific output by 150%

Economy Your first ten cities earn revenue, starting at 5 gold per city per turn Some technologies increase your revenue Cities after the 20 th cost gold for maintenance -6046 th and above -5041 st through 45 th -4036 th through 40 th -3031 st through 35 th -2026 th through 30 th -1021 st through 25 th 011 th through 20 th varies1 st through 10 th Income per City per Turn Cities

Economy Mining: –A city set to “Mining” earns 8 gold per turn –Some units can also mine gold, at the cost of movement points –To mine with these units, select one and press the F key for “Mine” –Mine spaces double the amount of gold mined at a location Mining spaces:

Economy Unit fees: –Your empire can support 25 units plus 5 additional units for each city –Extra units cost gold equal to 10% of their purchase cost per turn Disbanding and Demolishing –To save gold, you may need to disbanding a unit or demolish a city –To do this, select the unit or city and press backspace

Terrain The map is a grid of variable size It is cylindrical, meaning if you continue going right you will eventually reach your starting point Each space is either a water space or a ground space Ground spaces can have any combination of the following: roads, rivers, and mines Water: Roads: Rivers: Mines:

Terrain Moving a ground unit from a city or roads to a city or roads costs 0.5 movement points Moving a water unit to a river space costs 1.5 movement points All other moves cost 1 movement point Cities: Roads: Rivers:

Construction Some units can build roads and cities Some units can also build canals, which adds rivers to a space on the map To start construction, select one of these units and press the F key for “Roads”, “City”, or “Canal” Construction costs movement points

The Empire Screen The empire screen gives you access to various options and information You can exit the game or end your turn from the empire screen

Winning the Game There are two way to win the game: –Destroying all of your enemy’s cities and units –Reaching the turn limit set before the game began: In this case, the winner is determined using a formula Each player’s power index is doubled and added to his or her gold The power index is equal to the total of 10 times the HP plus the 15 times the attack rating for all units with a nonzero attack rating The player with the higher total wins
