1 Organizing, Sharing and Storing Web Pages: Using Furl.net By Paulette Martinez December, 2005 Prepared for Professor Linda Harris, University of Maryland at Baltimore County

2 Introduction Furl is a free web-based application that allows its users to save both links to web pages. Like other social-network applications it suggests other web-pages of interest and makes it easy for users to share their pages with others. Furl also archives copies of the book-marked web pages, if the article or page disappears from its original URL the user will have access to their copy of it.

3 Introduction Furl is a useful application for students and teachers, for colleagues working on collaborative projects, and for researchers and writers. It is also an ideal application for everyday projects, such as comparison shopping, creating “wish lists,” or tracking favorite sites and web radio stations when moving from workstation to workstation. To use Furl the user must be 13 years old or older, have a basic understanding of how to use a web browser, and have access to the internet and an email account.

4 How to Create an Account Before you can take advantage of all the features of Furl you must sign up for an account. Creating a new account is easy. You must to have a valid email address. You will be required to confirm your registration by return email.

5 Step 1—Log onto Furl.net Using a web browser log onto http://www.furl.nethttp://www.furl.net

6 Step 2—Create a free account Click on the “Create Your Free Account Button” located on the left side of the browser window.

7 Steps 3 & 4—Fill the registration form Fill in the fields in the sign up page. Be sure to include your email address, to choose a personal user name and password, and to check both the boxes at the bottom of the form Click the “Submit Registration” button when you have completed all the fields.

8 Steps 5 & 6 –Activate your account Check your email account for a validation email from furl.net. It will look something like the email to the left. Click the activation link. Your web browser will launch and bring you directly to your new account pages.

9 Step 7—Congratulate yourself You are now on your way to: More organized bookmarks Better collaboration and research Increased productivity
