1. In some countries it is common to give people names of flowers. If this is the case in your country, write the proper nouns in your own language and in English. In Spain, some names of flowers are Margarita – Daisy. Rosa – Rose. Azucena – lily. Violeta – violet. Flor – flower.

2. The bus tour around Madrid took you to the Botanical Gardens, very close to the Prado Museum. Are there any important botanical gardens in your country? Why are they important? The Botanical garden is a very important garden of Madrid. In Spain there are several important botanical gardens like Gijón city garden, with an important Atlantic species exhibition. The Viera and Clavijo botanical garden, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is famous because it is the biggest one in Spain, with a tropical trees exhibition.

Some proverbs or sayings in our country related to plants are 1.Quien a buen árbol se arrima buena sombra le cobija. (Who snuggles with a good tree is blanketed with a good shadow.) It means that when you are with good people you will have good results. 2.Ortiga desde que nace pica. (The nettle stings since its birth.) it means that the person who is born evil doesn’t ever change much. 3.De uvas a peras. (From grapes to pears.) It means that a long time has passed since the previous time.

6. What trees can you see in your city/town streets? Why are they chosen? In Madrid, we can see many kind of trees, such as False banana, horse chestnut and pine-trees. These species are chosen because they support very well the extreme continental climate of Madrid with very hot weather in summers and cold winters. I CAN SEE ELMS, PINES, ARTIFICIAL BANANA TREES and STRAWBERRY TREES, too.

There are some titles in Spanish literature that contain names of plants like “Las Adelfas” (The Oleanders) written by Antonio Machado, a very famous poet who wrote beautiful verses to the “Olmo Seco” (dry elm).

10. Has any area in your country been considered a biosphere reserve because of the plants or trees found there? There are many places considered biosphere reserve on the Spanish peninsula, like “Muniellos Park” in Asturias, with the biggest beech forest. Even in the Canary Islands you can find wonderful biosphere reserves in “La Palma”, with an ancient Laurisilva Forest and Maspalomas Beach.
