6
Sermon
7
Silence for reflection
8
When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
9
Forbid it Lord, that I should boast save in the death of Christ my God; all the vain things that charm me most; I sacrifice them to his blood.
10
See from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down; did e’re such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown.
11
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small: love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. © Isaac Watts 1674-1748 CCLI 202156
12
The cross is carried into the midst of the church. Three stations are made and three times we say: We adore you, O Christ and we bless you. Because, by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world. The Proclamation of the Cross
13
Priest: Let your bearing to one another arise out of your life in Christ Jesus. He humbled himself and in obedience accepted the death of the cross. God bestowed on him the name above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow and every tongue confess Jesus Christ is Lord. Prayer before the Cross
14
All: Father, hear our prayer and forgive us. Unstop our ears that we may receive the gospel of the cross. Open our eyes that we may see your glory in the face of your Son, that your truth may make us whole. Fill our hearts with your love that we may love one another for Christ's sake. Father, forgive us. Amen.
15
We come to the cross one by one or with others.…. We may kneel, touch, kiss, pray before the cross…. The Cross
16
O sacred head sore wounded, with grief and shame weighed down; O kingly head surrounded with thorns your only crown; death’s shadows rise before you, the glow of life decays: yet hosts of heaven adore you and tremble as they gaze.
17
What language shall I borrow to praise you, heavenly friend, for this your dying sorrow, your mercy without end? Such agony and dying! Such love to sinners free! O Christ, all grace supplying, turn now your face on me.
18
In this your bitter Passion, good shepherd, think of me, look on me with compassion, unworthy though I be: beneath your cross abiding for ever would I rest, in your dear love confiding, and with your presence blesse d.
19
Lord, be my consolation, my shield when death is near; remind me of your Passion, be with me when I fear. My eyes shall then behold you, upon your cross shall dwell, my heart by faith enfold you; and who dies thus, dies well. © Paul Gerhardt1607-76, from Salve caput cruentatum attrib. Bernard of Clairvaux 1091-1153 tr. James Waddell Alexander 1804-59 and others CCLI 202156
20
The response : Let us pray to the Lord, Lord hear our prayer. The Intercession
21
And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary’s hill, and having with us him who pleads above, we here present, we bring before you still that only offering perfect in your eyes, the one true, pure, immortal sacrifice During this hymn we take up a collection for ABM – Australian Board of Mission
22
Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our mis-usings of your grace, our prayer so halting, and our faith so dim: for now between our sins and their reward we set the passion of your Son our Lord.
23
And so we come; O draw us to your feet, most patient Saviour, who can love us still; and by this food, so awesome and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill; in your own service make us glad and free, and may we in your presence ever be.. © William Bright 182-1901 alt. CCLI202156
