1 Warm Up – November 17 The map to the left is the regular country map. In the one below the size of the land is adjusted to show the number of war deaths – the larger land forms are countries with many war deaths from 1945-2000. 1.Identify the countries of the Middle East that are larger than usual. 2.What have you learned that may explain this difference?

2 Your group of 5-6 people will be circulating to each of the 6 charts to add information. You should travel with your history worksheets to use as reference. Each time you get to a chart you will read what is already there and then add the next piece of information. The person whose name is underlined will get and return the marker. It will travel with you. That person will also write the answer to the first question and maybe the last one if there are 5 in the group. Each of the other people in the group will write the answer after the group has discussed it and agreed. Here is what you add each time: 1 st – What happened and why? 2 nd – What countries were involved? 3 rd – List any key people involved and their title 4 th - Put the date and what happened for some event concerning this topic. 5 th – Put the date and what happened for some event concerning this topic. 6 th – What was the outcome of this topic? 5 Warm Up – November 19 In the article you read after yesterday’s test the women of Saudi Arabia were driving in protest. 1.Is driving against the law? 2.The clerics said driving will lead to “licentiousness.” What does this mean? 3.What is their other reason why women should not drive? 4.What do you think is the real reason for this restriction?

6 Warm Up – November 20 1. What do you remember from your study of types of citizen participation or systems of government? 2.Do you remember SCUF or TOAD? 3.Anything else?

7 This map shows time spent at war by armed forces between 1945 and 2004. A large area on the map could mean small forces fighting for many years; large forces fighting for a few years; or something in between. The largest territory that avoided war throughout was Japan, followed by Sweden, Austria and Singapore. Warm Up – November 21 – Last one on this page. 9 Warm Up – December 2 In your notebook for today’s warm-up write “sticky note activity.” Read the economic standards listed on the Standards Wall, above the bulletin board or on the next slide. Which ones do you remember doing last year? Do you recall any information about the standard? Put any facts you remember about the standard on a sticky note and add it to the poster with that standard number. Some we have already talked about this year. Do you remember any facts from those? Put any facts that you recall on a sticky note and add it to the poster with that number. Put your name on your sticky notes.

11 Warm Up – December 3 Regular Map Crude Petroleum Exports 1.What does “crude petroleum” mean? What is it made into? 2.What countries of the Middle East are the top exporters? 3. How does this affect their economies?

12 Warm Up – December 4 1.Explain the primary function of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). 2.Some members of OPEC want the organization to cut back on oil production. What do they think that would cause? 3.Why do others think this is not a good idea and refuse to cut back? Hint: Remember the economic idea of supply and demand.

13 Warm up – December 5 This map shows fuel imports. Notice that the Middle East countries are small in this map since they do not need to import fuel. Compare any other country to Saudi Arabia in terms of fuel imports. What does this mean to the economies of both countries?
