Common Ground, Common Agenda: Common Infrastructure, Common Funding? Richard P. Barth, PhD, MSW NADD Spring Conference Fort Lauderdale, FL April, 2012 rbarth@ssw.umaryland.edu
2
The Challenges I Many Types of Organizations and Revenue Sources Organizational dues (CSWE, GADE, NADD, BPD) Individual annual dues (SSWR, AASWSW, CSWE, NASW) Conference (SSWR, CSWE, BPD) Conference/Event sponsorships (CSWE, SSWR) Founding sponsorships (AASWSW)
3
The Challenges II From a Dean’s Perspective – Many requests for funds SSWR event sponsorship NASW Social Work Congress – Unclear what I am buying for my dues e.g., GADE scholarships part of GADE dues NADD contributions to ANSWER? CSWE lobbying? – Unclear what we are not getting done GAP analysis needed CSWE lobbying SSWR “D.C.Presence” Answer NASW Policy Institute Location tax (SSWR and CSWE are often in D.C. )
4
The Challenges III From AASWSW Leadership Perspective – Small membership Not supported by conference – Unclear about what to ask of Deans directly or through other organizations – The Academy’s mission cuts across broad areas of social work and social welfare policy, research, and practice
5
Considerations re Financing Models Do we need an effort that focuses on social work organization finances? – E.g., a means to discuss what we get for our dues/investments and what else we should be investing in? Would a world standard setting regarding giving be useful? Is it feasible or wise to ask schools to collaborate on a standard setting regarding giving to social work organizations.

What’s Needed to Get this Done? A Priority/Standard Setting Structure? Is ANSWER the answer? – The Action Network for Social Work Education and Research (ANSWER) is a coalition of the following organizations: BPD, CSWE, GADE, NADD, NAASW, SSWR, NABSW, and the SW Policy Institute – Does not include SLG – Does not report back to GADE and SLG – Includes small CNABSW and unfunded groups (e.g. GADE) – The ANSWER coalition’s mission is to increase legislative and executive branch advocacy on behalf of social work education, training, and research via collaboration among social work education, research, and practice organizations, social work education programs, and other interested groups. – Do we need a SW Leadership Council that focuses on research (CSWE has one for social work education)
