2 What is this organization? GWIS is the Graduate Women in Science organization. Non-profit association

3 When was this organization formed? 1921 Began as an ‘old girl’s club’

4 How large is this organization? 1500 scientists 15 regional chapters in 11 states and in the District of Columbia and one chapter-at-large. The GWIS National Office is located in St. Paul, MN.

5 Is it still in existence today? Yes, it is still in existence today.

6 What is its primary mission? “To advance the participation and recognition of women in science and to foster research through grants, awards, and fellowships.” Society of scientists who encourage and support women to enter and achieve success in science.

7 How does one become a member? You do not have to be a woman to join, but you do need at least a bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline to become a member of GWIS. Yes, there are annual dues that vary depending on which kind of membership you would like and what chapter you join.

8 What is the composition of its members? There are approximately 1500 women scientists in this organization who have at least a bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline.

9 Does UMW have a chapter of this organization? No, UMW does not have a chapter of this organization. The closest chapter is located in Washington, DC.

10 Would your scientist likely belong to this organization? Yes, I do believe that Dr. Inez Fung would likely belong to this organization. I feel like this organization supports her views.

11 What project might your scientist encourage this organization to pursue? I believe that Inez Fung would encourage this organization to make a scholarship/grant.

12 Would you consider joining this organization? Why or why not? I believe that this is a wonderful organization. However, I would not consider joining because I am not planning on obtaining a degree in science.
