ANGER Friend or Foe? An Ethical Perspective
4
Anger is a strong emotion! The Webster’s Dictionary Definition of Anger is: The Webster’s Dictionary Definition of Anger is: “A strong feeling of displeasure, indignation, wrath, rage, fury.” “A strong feeling of displeasure, indignation, wrath, rage, fury.” As is implied by the definition, anger can take on many forms from mild displeasure to intense rage and fury.
5
Anger As An Emotion… It’s not a bad thing. It protects us from being treated wrongly. We should be angry when we experience injustices and also under a variety of other circumstances.
6
This is not the type of Anger that we are going to Address today!
7
UNCONTROLLED ANGER IS OUR FOCUS
8
Results of Uncontrolled Anger in Law Enforcement ► If not addressed, RAGE (violence) ► When it is present in us on the streets, there is a loss of ability to use rational judgment and common sense. ► It can be dangerous! Uncontrolled anger can cause you to focus ALL of your senses onto the one thing that you are angry at – thereby reducing your ability to make assessments of other threats.
9
As you can clearly see, Uncontrolled Anger WEAKENS us! It does not Strengthen US!
10
The National Institute of Ethics Research Results (1990-95) ► 2,296 Officers were decertified ► Of those 2,296 that were decertified, approximately 19.69% were for offenses committed that involved anger, such as… ► Batteries (9.15%) ► Excessive use of force (5.05%) ► Weapon Offenses (4.02%) ► Family Offenses (1.47%)
11
As Police Officers… Because of who we are and the fact that we are supposed to represent the “finest” of men and women in society, we can NEVER afford to lose control of an emotion that affects our rational judgment and common sense!!
12
Uncontrolled Anger can eventually lead to…

We Must by: Sgt. Willie O. Murphy In the face of unethical behavior, we must find the courage to be different, the strength to be ethical heroes and the desire to encourage others to do the same. In the face of unethical behavior, we must understand the importance of making right decisions. In the face of unethical behavior, we must ensure that our character stands tall and the thoughts of ostracism cower into oblivion. In the face of unethical behavior, we must truly begin to understand and embrace why we do our jobs. In the face of unethical behavior, we must learn to listen to and live by a conscience that is connected to principles. In the face of unethical behavior, we must know the power of our spoken words and immediate actions and also realize the potential devastation of our unspoken words and delayed actions. In the face of unethical behavior, we must rise above the blinded eyes, deafened ears and muted mouths of weakened cowards. In the face of unethical behavior, we must be those whose very presence causes unethical behavior to cease, desist and fear existence. In the face of unethical behavior, we must be willing to be criticized for doing what’s right, persecuted for standing our ground, misunderstood for going against the grain and even hurt for following our convictions. In the face of unethical behavior, we must do what we must!!
