“PARABLE OF THE CLOTH & WINESKIN” Peter Huang

2 Parable of the Cloth & Wineskin
2

3 Background Mt. 9:17, Mk. 2:22, Lk. 5:37-39
Jesus has just asked Levi (Matthew) to follow him. Levi held a banquet for Jesus : tax-collectors & others ate with them. Some Scribes and Pharisees present abstained from eating and rebuked them for their participation 3

4 Luke 5:30-32 30 And their scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, “Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

5 Seeing that Jesus did not answer their question in the way that they wanted, they asked another question. 5

6 Luke 5:33-35 (NKJV) 33Then they said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?” 34And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”

7 "The disciples of the Pharisees fast" BUT...
"John's disciples fast" and... "The disciples of the Pharisees fast" BUT... "Your disciples do not fast" What do you think the Pharisees are trying to say? Everyone who is spiritually minded is fasting, so why aren’t yours Jesus?

8 Luke 5:36-37(NKJV) 36 Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old.  37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined.

9 Luke 5:38-39 (NKJV) 38But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 39And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’”

10 Neither is new wine put in old wineskins; for if it is, the
skins burst and are torn in pieces, and the wine is spilled and the skins are ruined. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved. – Matthew 9:17 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the bottles destroyed; but new wine is to be put in new (fresh) wineskins. – Mark 2:22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the fresh wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled and the skins will be ruined (destroyed). But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine immediately desires new wine, for he says, The old is good or better. – Luke 5:37-39

11 One Question Three Illustrations
Why did Christ’s disciples not fast like the Pharisees? Marriage customs of the time. Old cloth and old garment represent? New wine & old wineskin represent? What do they represent?

12 New Patches on Old Clothes New Wine in Old Wineskins
Verse 36 Verses 37-39 New Patches on Old Clothes New Wine in Old Wineskins Illustrates scribes and Pharisees verses Jesus. They are the old, He is the new “Old garments and old wineskins” the hard hearts of the Pharisees “New patch & new wine” the gospel of repentance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand

13 QUIZ

14 What is the question that Jesus is answering here?
A) He was asked about the nature of the new covenant. No. B) He was asked about being born again. No, I mentioned that because people frequently say that the new wine is about being born again. C) He was asked why John's disciples, and the disciples of the Pharisees, fast, but Jesus' do not. Yes, the following parable was spoken to answer the question about why John's and the Pharisees' disciples fast, but Jesus' do not. D) Both (b) and (c) above. No, it is not about being born again.

15 Who is the bridegroom that Jesus is referring to?
1) Himself. 2) Any bridegroom, it doesn't matter. No, we was talking about the fact that he was here with his disciples, so why should his disciples be mourning. Jesus said that when he was taken away, that then they would fast. 3) The Kings son. No, unless you think of the Kings son being Jesus, and not a earthly king. Yes

16 What does the parable mean?
Must be born again to receive the new covenant. A a new covenant requires you to abandon the things that you do because of tradition and react to what is happening now. Yes, Jesus' disciples were not and should not be fasting, simply because it was traditional to do so. To do anything because it's the thing to do is a complete waste of time and not from the heart. C) The Old Testament is not relevant now that the New Testament has come. No, the Old Testament is still as valid today as it always was. No

17 What does Jesus mean by pouring new wine into new wineskins?
You should read the Word (Bible) without preconceived ideas about what it means, and let it form you into what it wants. B) Christians should not drink alcoholic wine. Christians should fast old wine, but not new wine. We should not let old sins soil our new birth. Yes No, this parable is answering the question about fasting, and is not about drinking alcoholic wine. No This is a true statement, but it is not what the parable is about.

18 What does Jesus mean by not patching an old garment with material removed from a new garment?
A) We should not try to fix our old life, but we should abandon it for a new life. No. This is not the best answer. B) You can't teach an old dog new tricks. No. C) We should not try to correct the problems of the old covenant, with revelations brought with the new covenant. Yes. The new covenant is new and should be embraced. The Old Covenant is over so let it rest.

19 What does Jesus mean by saying, 'And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, "The old is better''? A) The old covenant is better than the new. If someone is happy with the way things are now then they will not listen to correction. Yes. Everyone who thinks that they have found the answer is not likely to accept change. This problem is very wide spread today. There is so much bad doctrine around today and everyone loves it and won't listen to correction. Aged wine is better tasting that new wine. This is not what the parable is about. No
