Excretory System By Katie Ust
2
function Rid of waste, chemical build up, and useless cell byproducts Maintain balance
3
Types of Nitrogenous Waste Ammonia – produced by aquatic animals because only low concentrations can be tolerated Urea – produced by mammals, adult amphibians, sharks in vertebrate liver Uric acid – produced mainly by insects, reptiles, and birds because it requires little water loss
4
Excretory processes Filtration Renal corpuscle Filters blood reabsorption Renal tubule Solutes and water removed from tubular fluid and transported into blood
5
Excretory Processes Secretion Transfer of material from peritubular cavities to renal tubular lumen Active transport excretion Rids the body of unnecessary wastes
6
nephritis Inflames nephrons Caused by exposure to chemicals and toxins Symptoms include swelling from accumulated fluid, urine suppression, and a pale complexion
7
Kidney stones Crystals are formed around foreign material Symptoms include pain in side or back during urination Pain varies case to case, but can be very serious Can potentially block ureters and must be removed by doctors
