1 Overview of Project: 1.Discuss Paul Klee and the inspiration behind creating his famous painting, “Cat and Bird” (5-7 minutes) 2.Give each child a piece of watercolor paper and oil pastel 3.Begin a directed line instruction by using the oil pastel and drawing guide (10 minutes)

2 Overview of Project: 4.Using the student’s watercolors, ask the children to paint the cat’s face. (10 minutes) 5.After the cat’s face is painted, the children can pick one color to paint the background (5-10 minutes) 6.When everything is dry, use either a black oil pastel or black watercolor paint (oil pastel is better) to add whiskers (5 minutes)

6 Cat and Bird Klee owned many cats and they sat beside him as he painted. Do you see the bird? The bird is inside the cat’s dream.

7 Do you think the cat wanted to eat the bird?

8 Did You Know… That Paul Klee could paint with both his right and left hand? That he was considered a very famous painter while he was alive and that the public called him the “magical painter”? That Paul Klee wrote poetry?

9 Supplies You Will Need… 12” x 18” white 90# watercolor paper Black oil pastels Watercolor paint Water containers

10 Prep Give each child a piece of watercolor paper and oil pastel

18 Prep Set two containers of water per 5-6 kids and 1 brush per child.

19 Tips When teaching little ones to paint, give parameters. In this lesson, ask the children to paint the cat’s face first instead of just telling them to “start painting”. By controlling the areas, the children tend to paint more slowly.

20 Tips After the children paint the cat, they can then paint the background. Try to have the students paint the background just one color.
