IMMIGRATION BY THE 2007 6TH GRADE STUDENTS

Immigration to America before the Civil War was moderate due to the expense and difficulty of travel. During the Civil War there was hardly any Immigration After the Civil War ended Immigration picked up again and many came to America

In the 50 years before before the Civil War about 5 million immigrants came to America In the 50 years following the War 25 million people came to America

One of the reasons Immigration picked up is Steam Boats. Passage on one of these boats across the Atlantic was about $10-$15.

Where The Immigrants Came From 1860-1880 Most of the Immigrants came from Germany, Great Britain, Iceland and Scandinavia

People from Japan and China begin to Immigrate The people of Eastern and Southern European Countries as well as Russia began to come to America too 1880-1920

Why they Came Some people didn’t intend to stay but wanted to earn money to buy land back home

Some people left for religious freedom. They were persecuted in their country.

Birds of Passage We left our brains and hearts at home Many became known as Birds of Passage

Immigrant Life Living Conditions were poor for the Immigrants. Especially in Big Cities

Often two or three families would live in small apartments together

Facts About New York around 1900 More Italians lived in New York than in any city in Italy except Rome More Greeks lived in New York than in any city in Greece besides Athens More Irish lived in New York City than any city except Dublin More Germans lived in New York City than any city except Berlin MORE JEWS LIVED IN NEW YORK THAN ANY OTHER CITY IN THE WORLD

Most of these Immigrants lived communities with people of like heritage. Most of the time these communities were run down and living conditions were very poor

New Immigrants worked in Textile factories, steel mills and meat packing plants Because a lot of Immigrants didn’t know English

Many of the cities and the infrastructure of American Civilization (roads, railroads, buildings, water and sewer systems) were built by Immigrant Labor

The railroad was built mainly by Irish and Chinese Immigrants

This created many cities with Immigrant sections.

Even though life in America was hard for the Immigrant, It was still usually much better than what they left behind.

People continue to Immigrate today. Hoping for a better life People continue to Immigrate today. Hoping for a better life
