Place Value from Millions to Thousandths
Unit 1
2
What happens when you multiply a number by powers of 10?
7
WHAT DO YOU NOTICE ABOUT THE DIFFEFENCE OF EACH PLACE VALUE?
8
Our Number system is based on 10
This is what is called the Power of Ten!
9
Let’s look at place value when each digit in the number is the same
3, This 3 is in the ones place. It has a value of 3.
10
Let’s look at place value when each digit in the number is the same
3, This 3 is in the tens place. It has a value of 30.
11
Let’s look at place value when each digit in the number is the same
3, This 3 is in the hundreds place. It has a value of 300.
12
Let’s look at place value when each digit in the number is the same
3, This 3 is in the thousands place. It has a value of 3000.
13
That is the whole number side to the left of the decimal
Now let’s look to the right of the decimal.
14
Let’s look at place value when each digit in the number is the same
3, This 3 is in the tenths place. It has a value of of the 3 in the ones place. 1 10

Let’s look at place value when each digit in the number is the same
3, This 3 is in the hundredths place. It has a value of of the 3 in the ones place. 1 100
16
Let’s look at place value when each digit in the number is the same
3, This 3 is in the thousandths place. It has a value of of the 3 in the ones place. 1 1000

Practice 1: 25 x 103 = 25 x (10 x 10 x 10) = 25 x = 25,000
18
Practice 2: 32 x 105 = 32 x (10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10) = 32 x 100, = 3,200,000
19
Practice 3: 46 x 106 = 46 x (10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10) = 46. x 1,000, = 46,000,000
20
Practice 4: 3.5 x 104 = 3.5 x (10 x 10 x 10 x 10) = 3.5 x 10, = 35,000
21
Practice 5: 5.1 x 102 = 5.1 x (10 x 10) = 5.1 x = 510
22
PRACTICE 6: 6.73 x 105 = 6.73 x (10 x 10 x10 x 10 x 10) = 6.73 x 100, = 673,000

24
What happens when you multiply a number by powers of 10?
The exponent above the ten indicates how many places the decimal point is moving to the right because you are multiplying making the number 10 times greater when you multiply by the power of ten.

Independent Practice (Interactive Notebook)
3 x 106 = 12 x 102 = 72 x 109 = 8.6 x 104 = 7.5 x 105 =
