Brief Outline of Field Trip – NSCI7108 15 Credit Level 7 Course – within the Bachelor of Applied Science, Department of Natural Sciences Taught in the Summer Semester Aims and Learning Outcomes

Aim: To provide an opportunity to consider and study in situ, the ecology and conservation of a critically endangered ecosystem. Learning Outcomes develop an appreciation and understanding of the conservation challenges facing part of the island of Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia); have the opportunity to study the ecology and biodiversity of tropical rainforest; design and carry out research studies based on the impacts of logging activities in tropical rainforest - in a challenging and unfamiliar environment; analyse and interpret primary field data; develop your skills for accurate, intelligent data collection and observation; data recording and presentation; work in a team

Maliau Basin c.59,000 ha – conservation area 390km 2 (39,000 ha) Pristine Forest (difference is regenerating forest) Escarpment over 1675m ASL 12 Forest types Survey team first entered in 1982 Designated conservation area 1984 Gazetted as a Class 1 (Protection FR) 1997

In more detail Cost – C.$3900 All food, flights, transfers, trips, accommodation, insurance for all days included Vaccinations, additional food and drink, other medical requirements, personal effects, spending money not included Medical consult a doctor if you suffer from any illness or physical weakness Vaccinations at least 6 weeks prior to departure ($300) Dangers H&S briefing Animals, plants, forest, environment, people, flights, disease, road incident Food – Plenty but meat oriented. Some vegetarian options. Vegan options not available. Bring or buy additional food there.

Deposit $400 by 14 th September Passport – MUST BE VALID FOR 6 MONTHS FROM THE END OF THE TRIP Balance of total due 1 st November H&S documents submitted 1 st November Insurance details submitted 1 st November Course officially starts in December (Summer Semester) Arrive in Auckland 14 th or 15 th January for Pecha kucha and departure
