FACTS On an average day: 881,684 teens smoke cigarettes 646,707 teens smoke marijuana 457,672 teens drink alcohol. In one day, 71,000 American teens are in outpatient treatment for substance abuse. Ten-thousand more teens are in other forms of treatment for substance abuse.
7
Dangers of using Marijuana Even though may people state that smoking marijuana helps them concentrate and pass their tests. It has been proven that long-term effects of marijuana can lead to an adverse effect on memory and learning. People can injure themselves and die because of marijuana’s effects on judgment, perception, and coordination. Marijuana was a factor in over 370,000 visits to the emergency department in 2009. About two-thirds of those patients were male, and 12% were teens ages 12 to 17.
8
Dangers of using Prescription Drugs The most frequently misused medications are: opioid painkillers (e.g., OxyContin and Vicodin); central nervous system (CNS) depressants used for anxiety and sleep disorders (e.g., Valium and Ativan); and stimulants that treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. Drug overdose death rates have been rising steadily since 1992 with a 118% increase from 1999 to 2011 alone. Among children under age 6, pharmaceuticals account for about 40% of all exposures reported to poison centers.
9
DRUG ABUSE Whether smoking tobacco kills someone from cancer over years or an overdose of heroin kills someone in one night, all drugs have the potential to be abused. The number of teens dying from drug overdoses and abuse now exceeds the number of deaths from motor vehicle accidents in the U.S.
