Using ‘Types’ to study the Bible Intro to Typology
2
What’s the point? The Old Testament points toward the coming of Jesus Christ, and it anticipates His work and His accomplishments. The fullest understanding of Jesus, His work, and His accomplishments requires both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
3
Relating the two Testaments “The writers of the New Testament look back upon the Old Testament as foreshadowing, indeed prophesying, their own day. God was preparing the world for a full and final revelation of himself and his Son, Jesus Christ, in types and shadows that he used in earlier times.” –Evangelical Commentary on the Bible
4
Relating the two Testaments, continued “Jesus is seen as the fulfillment of all that went before and as the summation of all of God’s dealing with mankind. His life, death, and resurrection marked the end of the old and the beginning of the new. Because the Old Testament pointed directly to Jesus, the early Christians used it as their own Bible and structured their lives according to its spiritual teachings.” –Evangelical Commentary on the Bible
5
How ‘types’ or typology help us relate the Old & New Testaments Typology: “Differing from symbol or an allegory, a typology is a representation of an actual, historical reference. According to Christian exegesis, biblical typology deals with the parallels between actual, historical (usually OT) figures or events in salvation history and their later, analogous fulfillment. Often NT events and figures are typologically understood and interpreted according to an OT pattern (e.g., creation and new creation, Adam and Christ, the exodus and NT concepts of salvation).” – Pocket Dictionary of Theological Terms Defining allegory and exegesis
6
The Bible as Salvation History “The very possibility of… typology depends on the Christian assumption that the Bible recounts the course of salvation history.” – Oxford Companion to the Bible
