Common Core Standards Initiative A coalition of 48 states (including KY), two territories and District of Columbia developed new English/language arts and mathematics standards Kentucky educators provided input A KDE survey gave various stakeholder groups an opportunity for feedback on the public version of the standards

February 10, 2010 KBE, CPE and EPSB adopt Common Core Standards in English/ language arts and mathematics Kentucky first in nation to adopt

Developed in cooperation with OAA with stakeholder input from NTAPAA and SCAAC KBE to consider at October meeting with final regulatory approval in Feb. 2011 First used based on scores from spring 2012 testing Title 1 schools will also be accountable under NCLB New Accountability System

Unified Plan for College Readiness Goals: Reduce college remediation rates by at least 50% by 2014 in comparison to 2010 rate Increase college completion rates in students enrolled in one or more remedial classes by 3% annually from 2009 to 2014 Objective: Reduce college remediation and increase postsecondary graduation

Unified Plan for College Readiness Accelerated learning opportunities (Early college; Advanced Placement, Dual Credit, International Baccalaureate and Project Lead the Way/ STEM) Secondary and postsecondary interventions (Credit recovery; transitional courses and targeted interventions; bridge programs at the high school level) Advising (Professional development on advising toolkit and use of ILP; Kentucky Scholars Initiative, Gear UP and KnowHow2GO) College persistence and degree completion (Student support and intervention)

Board Examination System Initiative of the National Center of Education and the Economy and five Board Exam System providers Goal is to prepare high school students for success in two-year and four-year open admissions colleges and ensure they will earn a degree Kentucky is participating with eight other states in planning process to explore feasibility and pilot system (2011-12)

Board Examination System Quality teacher training matched to the course syllabi High quality exams derived from the curriculum using multiple assessment methods Sound core program of courses defining what it means to be an educated person Thoughtfully constructed course designs captured in a syllabus
