I Corinthians 13:1-8 “Does not envy” (vs. 4) – present active indicative of zeloō – to be jealous; envious; spiteful; to be heated or to boil with envy, hatred, or anger. Envy is related to the attitude of those who felt that their gifts were inferior (12:14-17) – Love would have solved that problem. Spiteful – ill will with the disposition to irritate & annoy; bear grudges. Cf. Song of Solomon 8:6 Envy – a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another’s advantages, success, possessions, etc. Emphasizes the importance of no mental attitude sins in our life.

I Corinthians 13:1-8 The demon of envy will lead to bitterness. Cf. Colossians 3:19 – “bitter” – present middle imperative of pikrainō – “stop being bitter” - to be embittered; to grow angry & harsh. See Hebrews 12:15.
