Editing You have many ways to put your video together.

Editing  Definition: To select and place video & audio clips into a specific order  Can be very difficult to sort footage, select shots, & hide footage problems  Editor must work closely with director & producer

Before you edit:  Shoot good quality footage!  Use a storyboard or script to plan shots needed!  Log all footage!  Label all tapes you are using! (Master=finished segment)

Editing Choices  Switching: Edits done with a switcher during a live broadcast

Editing Choices  Linear: Copying clips from one source to another (tape to tape editing); usually done from beginning to end in sequence

Editing Choices  Nonlinear: Using digital technology to place clips in any order desired; offers most creative options

Use the correct timing!  It takes 30 frames for one second of video.  You must have 5 full seconds to preroll the video in order for an edit to work on many editing systems. That’s why you need good 5 counts before and after each shot.

Use a variety of shots!  Make sure the pictures help tell the story.  Do NOT 2 moving shots next to one other. (zoom, pan, etc.)  Use cutaways to cover jump cuts & to provide variety and visual interest.  Mix your shots of people--single to 2 people to crowd to object to single, etc.  Don’t use the same shot twice.

Reminders  Timing of scenes affects the mood created in the video.  Sound tracks add emotion & interest.  You can’t fall in love with all of the footage. Something must be cut.  Editors do NOT always get their way. They work for the producer & director.

Editing is Challenging!  Be ready for stress, competition, demanding deadlines, and even more demanding production teams!
