Ed Code 51210.2(b) The Physical Education Minute Requirement
200 minutes every 10 days Exclusive of recess and lunch Does not include: Running club/elective activities After school activities Instruction by some one w/out appropriate credentialing When in doubt ask yourself, “Which of the physical education content standards is this addressing?” If the answer is none, then it likely would not be considered physical education instruction
4
PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS…
Cognitive 40% of standards based on knowledge Motor skills & movement patterns Physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies Physical Students engage in Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) at least 50% of Class Time Walking briskly, dancing, swimming, cycling Elevated heart rate and other signs of exertion Psychological, Social and Emotional
5
PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS ALSO…
Standards-Based Focused on grade level outcomes Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) are communicated Collect evidence of student learning Cross-Disciplinary Aligned to Common Core State Standards Next Generation Science Standards Much, much more!
6
Model Content Standards for Physical Education
Annotate each of the 5 overarching standards for the grade level you teach Underline key phrases Circle words that could be considered “academic language” Put a ? next to things you wonder about Write notes and/or connections you can make to other disciplines in the margins
7
Table Discussions What stood out to you?
Which standards do you feel like you are currently addressing? Which standards need more focus? What connections can you make to other disciplines? How might you use Common Core State Standards to engage students with physical education content more rigorously?
8
Common Core Implications for Physical Education
Utilize Performance Based Assessments Collect evidence of what students know/are able to do Can utilize rubrics, video, skill performance, data collection and analysis, open response, etc. Align to Grade Level Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Look at the verb in the physical education standard and determine which of the CCSS are appropriate Engage Students w/Informational Text Pictures, playbooks, diagrams, manuals, video, charts, multi-step directions, brochures, articles, educreations, etc
9
More Common Core Implications for Physical Education
Ask Text Dependent Questions Require students to use evidence from text Use Academic Vocabulary Biomechanics Kinesiology Physics Anatomy Create Student Centered Learning Opportunities Stations/Circuits Jigsaw Reciprocal Collaborative Peer Teaching
10
Quality Physical Education Should…
Focus on the STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME…not the sport! Keep ALL students ACTIVE (heart rates up) for at least 50% of instructional time! Try to have at least 1 piece of EQUIPMENT for every 2 students With limited equipment, USE STATIONS or create circuits All games should be SMALL SIDED (3-5 students max) Be the PLUMBER…fix leaks as needed
11
Quality Physical Education Should Never…
Be optional Use exercise as a punishment Publicly pick teams Play games with human targets Play elimination games Have only a few students moving at one time Be free play
12
Table Discussions Write down a TOPIC SENTENCE that describes how your practice re: will/could/should change to increase student learning in physical education List three SUPPORTING ACTIONS you will/could/should implement to support this change in practice SHARE your sentence and “To Do” list with your table WRITE down any good ideas you hear from colleagues Put the post-it note somewhere you will see it as a REMINDER!
