AD 400 – Began to choose religion over the Bible! 1.The worship of Mary, 431 2. Priests began to dress differently from the laity 500 3. The doctrine of Purgatory was first established by Gregory the Great 593 4. The Latin language, as the language of prayer and worship in churches imposed 600 5. Prayers directed to Mary, or to dead saints. 600 6. The Papacy !. The title of pope or universal bishop, was first given to the bishop of Rome. 610 7. The Temporal power of the Popes – Popes ruling over land and Kings 750 8. Worship of the images and relics was authorized 788 9. Holy Water, mixed with a pinch of salt and blessed by the priest, was authorized 850 10. The celibacy of the priesthood was decreed by Pope Hildebrand, Boniface VII 1079 11. The Inquisition of heretics was instituted by the Council of Verona in the year 1184. 1184 12. The sale of Indulgences - purchase of forgiveness and a permit to indulge in sin. 1190 13. The dogma of Transubstantiation was decreed by Pope Innocent III, in the year 1215 14. Confession of sin to the priest at least once a year was instituted by Pope Innocent III., 1215 15. Pope Innocent III issued a law commanding “that they shall be seized for trial and penalties, who engage in the translation of the scriptures 1215 16. The Bible forbidden to laymen and placed in the Index of forbidden books 1229 17. Ordered all vernacular version to be brought to the bishop to burned. 1234
