Empower Businesses to Secure and Enforce IPR at Home and Abroad Increase Efforts to Seize Counterfeit Goods at U.S. Border Pursue Criminal Enterprises Involved in IP Theft Collaborate with Industry and Associations Aggressively Engage Our Global Partners to Join Efforts

4 Office of the IP Coordinator Page 4 U.S. Government Internal Coordination Results: Seizure of Counterfeit Goods at Border U.S. Customs seized 14,000 counterfeit shipments in FY07 Value of those shipments – $200 million, a 27% increase from the previous year China remained the origin for 80% of counterfeit goods (Hong Kong next at 6%) Electronic recordation of IP rights Destruction of goods, seizure of assets & equipment, fines, imprisonment

5 Office of the IP Coordinator Page 5 U.S. Government Internal Coordination Results: Prosecution 230 IP prosecutors Criminal cases remain high: 33% increase over last 2 years Defendants sentenced for IP crimes: 35% increase over last year (92% over year before) Defendants sentenced to prison terms of > 2 yrs: 130% increase

6 Office of the IP Coordinator Page 6 International Cooperation – Trading Partners The U.S. Government has continued to work with our trading partners to strengthen inter-governmental efforts to combat global counterfeiting and piracy. U.S.-EU Working Group on Intellectual Property Security & Prosperity Partnership (SPP) G8 Enforcement Strategy Bilateral Activities Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA)
