2 PSI Mission The Pharmaceutical Security Institute is a fact finding, non-profit making organisation dedicated to: Protecting the public health Sharing information on counterfeiting activity Initiating enforcement actions with the appropriate authorities PSI currently has 26 members, which are some of the worlds major pharmaceutical companies.

6 What are some of the issues in this case? Issue 1: Raising awareness of the dangers Self-diagnosis. Self-prescribing. Knowing the source. Issue 2: Counterfeiters dont just manufacture 1 packet! So where is the rest of it? What was the batch number and other details? What was the result of the analysis?

7 What progress has been made to protect consumers? Companies Anti-Counterfeiting programmes include: Experienced investigators Skilfully conducted, international investigations Profiling & Targeting the counterfeiters & distributors Trying to work more closely with the authorities More cases identified and better quality arrests Greater awareness Commitment of international, regional and national organisations

8 What are the responsibilities of the public and private sector? Find ways of working together Dont just stop c/f medicines at the borders Share vital details to increase knowledge & investigations Recognise the skills each sector can provide Develop joint projects Use existing legislation or consider changes Push for maximum penalties and investigate assets
