2 ALLUVIAL PLAIN An area of fertile soil deposited by river floodwaters; for example, India’s Gangetic Plain

3 SUBCONTINENT A large, distinct landmass that is joined to a continent; for example, India

4 MONSOON Seasonal winds that brings heavy rains from moist ocean air

5 CYCLONE Another name for a hurricane except in the Atlantic Ocean

6 JATI A means of indentification among Hindus that defines one’s occupation and social position

7 DHARMA Moral duty that is required of every person in Hindu belief

8 REINCARNATION Hindus believe that after death people undergo this rebirth as another living being until overcoming personal weaknesses and earthly desires

9 KARMA Laws in accord with one’s dharma; these are good deeds that one does in life to move to a higher state of being

10 MERCANTILISM An economic system of using colonies for supplying materials and markets to the colonizing country

11 RAJ The Hindi word for “empire”; the British used this word to refer to their Indian Empire

12 GURU A teacher; from the Sikh religion

13 S IKH A religious group that incorporates elements of Hinduism and Islam; found mainly in northwestern India

14 LAMA A Buddhist monk from the Tibetan region

15 MANTRA Repetitive prayers; found in the Buddhist faith

16 STUPA Buddhist domed shrines found in Nepal and Sri Lanka

17 DZONG Fortified monasteries found in Bhutan

18 JUTE A fiber used to make string, rope, and cloth; a major cash crop in Bangladesh

19 BIOMASS Plant material and animal waste; people will burn this when it is their only energy source

20 INTERDEPENDEN T When two or more things are reliant on one another

21 C HIPKO A movement from India based on respect for trees and nature; translates from Hindi as “tree- hugger”

22 NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION The spreading development of nuclear arms; this has been seen between India and Pakistan

23 D ALITS Those in India assigned to the lowest social status; known as “oppressed”, they experience discrimination and violence
