1
Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning An overview of POGIL presented by Bart Fennemore
2
What is POGIL? A form of group learning Use of specially designed inquiry materials Leading questions guide students toward their own valid conclusions Students are prompted to use the Scientific Method for learning The instructor is a facilitator of the material and will periodically intervene for individual and class-wide issues.
3
Who is POGIL meant for? Currently, science courses Textbooks utilizing POGIL have been developed for: General Chemistry Physical Chemistry Organic Chemistry Biochemistry
4
Why use POGIL? Experienced learning is more likely to convert to true learning Students that are interactive with the curriculum are more successful Knowledge means more when students have input into their own understanding Provides instructor with instant and continuous feedback
5
POGIL provides Better Learning for Students An environment of active engagement and thinking Conclusions are drawn from analyzing data and discussing ideas Teamwork is required Problem-solving skills are nurtured
6
Benefits of POGIL for Students Student-centric Logical thinking and teamwork is valued above the correct answer Learning is not a solitary activity Learning is different than memorizing Knowledge is constructed by students Students are engaged and energized
7
What do POGIL materials look like? The cover sheet Topic title A leading question of “Why?” Short introduction to lesson materials Learning Objectives Success Criteria Prerequisites Provides sequence New Concepts Definitions: usually student created
8
What do POGIL materials look like? The lesson materials Information or Model Key Questions Questions lead to discussion for understanding of information or model Exercises Formative learning exercises to be done in cooperation with Key Question discussion Problems Success Criteria marker
9
Support for POGIL NSF funding supports dissemination of the POGIL model Attend a 1-3 day conference Use materials that have already been developed and tested Visit a site implementing POGIL Consult with the experts via phone, email, or web Apply for on-site consultation
10
Cost of implementing POGIL Virtually free Highschool materials for Chemistry can be obtained from the POGIL web site without any fees General Chemistry text Foundations of Chemistry $38 per pupil (shipping included) $300 for site license – allows access to electronic version of the text for the life of the current edition
