Technology such as satellites GIS mapping software for computers GIS is “real-time” and layers maps to see patterns. (a “sandwich of maps”) Can see the entire World from above! Columbus would’ve been jealous!

Place Names Names of places change Examples: Formosa -> Taiwan
China claims it owns Taiwan. B. Palestine –> Israel Palestinians own West Bank and Gaza Strip but Israel controls them

Decolonization Colonization is when a country takes over other countries or parts of the world. ->1800s European countries control Africa. In the 1960s African nations got independence and the map was redrawn Q: If you had to redraw the boundaries of countries what might be some things you would consider when making a new map? Q: What would happen if you got that wrong?

In 1948, the UN created the country of Israel as a home for Jews. The Muslim countries around Israel attacked the new country Israel won 1948 War of Indy the day war, 1973 Yom Kippur War
