The Great Schism By: Peter Feely and Hao Chen
2
Cause Babylonian Captivity- Papacy moved in 1309 to Avignon. Avignon was just outside French territory and on the Rhone river. Phillip the Fair (King of France) had much influence over the pope. 1377- Pope Gregory XI returned the papacy to Rome. The French didn't like the Italian pope that replaced Gregory XI after he died. French resulted in electing another pope. This double pope dilemma resulted in the division of Western Europe over which pope to support.
3
Story of the Great Schism France, Sicily, Scotland, Castile, Aragon, and Portugal supported the Avignon pope. Rome, Flanders, Poland, Hungary, and Germany supported the Roman pope. There was constant rivalry between then. Because of this, some people were clueless of which to support while others took advantage to build alliances. Papal offices finally lost authority because of the vicious acts of biased supporters.
4
Impact on Medieval Europe There was religious chaos in Europe. Politically divided Western Europe. The bible was the ultimate authority, not the Church. Council of Pisa elected ONE new pope. Many reforms to church- Some wanted division between religion and government some thought religious leaders were more interested in luxury and money rather than religion, and others pointed out scandals by Clergy members.
5
How end the Middle Ages The Schism that split Eastern and Western Christianity changed the view of the world from a religious standpoint to a more scientific standpoint. Italy starts a cultural revolution using Roman Catholicism.
