An “application” was for employment. A “program” was a TV show. A “cursor” used profanity. A “keyboard” was a piano. “Web” was a spider’s home and… “Memory” was something you lost with age.

EDT 608 Unit 1 Software Applications for the Classroom There are thousands of educational software programs for schools. One basic software program that is found on most school computers is Microsoft Office which is comprised of three applications: –Word Processing (MS Word) –Spreadsheet (MS Excel) –Presentation (MS Power Point) MS Office and each of its three applications will be discussed and used in this course. One other software program that will be used in the course is Inspiration Software Inc.’s Inspiration which is used as a brainstorming and planning tool.

EDT 608 Unit 1 Microsoft Office- MS Word With this word processing software you can make : Back-to-school night flyers with pictures and graphics Award certificates with students names Any number of professional looking printed forms, brochures, and letters. And of course, tests, assignment sheets, and study guides, etc.

EDT 608 Unit 1 Microsoft Office- MS Excel With this spreadsheet software you can manage your student information including: –Grades –Contact information –Textbook information –Key assignment and test dates You can also: –Manage your classroom budget –Make and sort lists of books and references –Maintain an alphabetized phone book –Make complex calculations –Write computation formulas

EDT 608 Unit 1 Microsoft Office- Power Point With this presentation software you can: –Animate text in numerous ways such as flying onto the screen. –Present color pictures, graphs, and charts that can be made to appear as desired. –Include video clips with sound. –Utilize professional transition effects between slides. –Hyperlink to the Internet and return to your presentation with ease. –And a variety of other presentation applications.

EDT 608 Unit 1 Inspiration With this very innovative and versatile software, you can do a variety of things. Use Inspiration across the curriculum for: –Brainstorming –Webbing –Diagramming –Planning –Critical thinking –Concept mapping –Organizing –Outlining Inspiration's integrated diagramming and outlining environments work together to help students comprehend concepts and information. Educators use Inspiration to customize instruction, achieve standards, assess student progress, and energize learning.

Use technology as a tool to assist administrators in assessing, organizing, evaluating, and retrieving information essential to support the teachers and students in the classroom. (Note: Microsoft Office can be used in the office as well as in the classroom.)

EDT 608 Unit 1 Issues for Schools Educational software must address State Standards, State Tests, and required curriculum subjects. Student performance objectives, as measured by paper and pencil tests, must be included in a technology oriented curriculum. Paper and pencil test preparation should be integrated into computer student assessment programs.

EDT 608 Unit 1 Closing Comments District-wide computer network should be utilized Internet and E-Mail capabilities should be provided to all teachers and staff Notebooks for all Teachers and Data/Video projectors in every classroom should be goals. Multimedia capabilities for all classrooms and a 1-4 computer to students ratio should be objectives. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software would be a good start in using technology for both instruction and administration.
