Homework: --Pick a $US. coin, (Quarter, Dime, Nickel, Penny) and identify its 1) Composition(what it is made of) 2) How this coin is minted.  Bonus point: Answer: What is the composition of braces: What Alloys/ Metals are they made of? DoNow… (Please)  Write down Homework  Update T.O.C: pg. 67: Metals and Alloys  Open Notebook to page 67  Open Textbook to pg. 130

Example: Comparing Metals and Alloys A. Properties of Metals:  Property 1  Property 2…. Example: B. Properties of Alloys

Alloy- A mixture made of two or more elements that has the properties of a metal –at least one of the elements is a metal  Many alloys are made by melting metals and mixing them together in carefully measured amounts  Are used much more then pure metals, because they are generally stronger and less likely to react with air and water: What is something that can happen to metals when they react with air and water?

 Why is Steel used for forks and spoons instead of Iron?  Because stainless steel does not rust. (It can be washed over and over again with out rusting)  Depending on their properties steels may become bicycle frames, train rails, steel tubing or construction equipment  Alloys are used to make items ranging from plumping materials, sprinkler systems to tableware, and doorknobs.

 Why is most Jewelry made of gold alloys rather than pure gold?

Make a Prediction:  What do you think will happen to each of the metal items in the plastic bag after leaving them in the salt water solution over the weekend?
