What Is NV VINE Started in Louisville Kentucky in 1994 The Story of Mary Byron In 1996 Kentucky established the first automated statewide victim information notification system

What Is NV VINE There are currently 47 states that have VINE in at least one of their counties

What Is NV VINE Benefits To Victims –Provide victims access to more timely and consistent information and notification through a variety of options –Provide victims with notifications across jurisdictional lines –Ensure victims “don’t fall through the cracks.” –Empower victims – opt in or out of service. –Ensure notifications 24/7 offender status.

What Is NV VINE Benefits To Victims –Serve more victims – TTY, email, phone –Provide access to trained operator at anytime –Ensure victim’s legal right to notification –Promotes collaboration between agencies, counties, victim advocacy providers, and justice professionals

Understanding the Nevada VINE Project Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Grant Funding –BJA Grant Funded through State of Nevada Attorney General’s Office –Funded to establish a Statewide Victim Notification System –Victims can register for notification via email or toll- free number –Victims can receive notification via email, TTY or phone

Why VINE Mission “To serve crime victims, survivors, and improve community safety by establishing standards and guidelines for comprehensive, automated information and notification services.”

Why VINE A Legal Obligation Victims of crime have a constitutional right to be: –Informed, upon written request, of the status or disposition of a criminal proceeding at any stage of the proceeding; –Present at all public hearings involving the critical stages of a criminal proceeding; and –Heard at all proceedings for the sentencing or release of a convicted person after trial. –Nevada Constitution Article I, Section 8.
