5. Example 1 Understand What facts do you know? The roll of string is 78 inches long. Each keychain is 12 inches long. She has already used 12 inches of string. What do you need to find? Does Annie have enough string to make 6 more keychains?

6. Example 1 Plan Use the act it out strategy with a piece of string that is 78 inches long. Mark off the amount used for the first keychain, 12 inches, and continue marking off lengths of 12 inches until there are six more keychains or no more string left.

7. Example 1 Solve Notice that there is only enough string for 5 more keychains. Answer: So, there is not enough plastic string for 6 more keychains.

8. Example 1 Check Look back at the problem. Is the answer reasonable? Check by multiplying. Since 12 × 6 = 72 and 12 × 7 = 84, there is only enough string for 6 keychains in all, not 7.
