2 Today: ID Chapter 4 – Designing for Collaboration and Communication

3 As processing power and memory capacity expand, opportunities for enhanced collaborative software arise, but developing appropriate interfaces for that software will be a challenge. Microsoft Surface Large tabletop display Touchscreen (52 simultaneous touches) Nintendo Wii Wii Remote is virtual racket, bat, etc. Mii caricatures as game avatars Osaka University’s IllusionHole Multi-user stereoscopic display Control ring for rotating displayed item

4 Social Software Computer-mediated communication has been facilitated by the development of numerous software applications. Instant Messaging Multi-user Real-time Text-based Low security Web Logs (Blogs) Web-based journal Text, images, links Reader commentary Defamation liability Wiki Collaborative website User editable Facilitates corrections Susceptible to vandalism MMORPG Multiplayer online RPGs Client-server system Possibly addictive

5 Social Software Motivations The motivations for using social software might provide the inspiration for designing its interfaces. Empowerment Users feel more like active participants in a process instead of being mere observers Community By sharing information and interacting with others, users feel less detached than when using traditional software Immediacy Rather than having to undergo extensive searches for information, users often feel that the information is being brought to them Input capabilities should be expanded in the interface Interface design must emphasize all users’ capacity for inputting information Effective means for displaying networked and/or database information must be provided
