Think about it… SpongeBob Clean Pants: SpongeBob notices that his favorite pants aren’t as clean as they used to be, so he tries a new laundry detergent called CLEAN-O!!!. SpongeBob made sure to wash one pair of pants in plain water, one in his normal detergent and another pair with Clean-O. After washing the pants 3 times, he observed to see which pants were the cleanest. 1) What is the MANIPULATED VARIABLE? a)Pants b) Detergent c) SpongeBob d) washing machine used 2) What is the RESPONDING VARIABLE? a)How colorful the pants are b) the size of the pants c) how clean the pants are 3) How many CONTROLLED VARIABLES should an experiment have? a) Only 1 b) only 3 c) only 10 d) the more the better (VALID)

Think about it… 1.Make 5 observations about this picture. 2.Make 2 inferences about this picture (what do you think is going on).
3
Identifying Variables!!!! Variable= any factor that can change the outcome of an event. Ex- What variables might affect the growth of a tomato plant? What variables might affect the attendance at a football game? What variables might affect the number of fish in a pond?
4
3 types of Variables

Identifying Variables…. Event- Mr. G wants to know what type of clothing will allow him to run the 100 meter dash the fastest. He runs the 100 meter dash in 3 different outfits. Outfit #1- Shorts and a tee shirt Outfit #2- A suit and tie Outfit #3- A speedo What is the MANIPULATED VARIABLE? The outfits What is the RESPONDING VARIABLE? The time it took to run 100 meters What are some CONTROLLED VARIABLES? the distance ran, weather, track, person running, energy, stretching, etc

Making Inferences An inference is a logical answer (guess) based on your observation(s). Logical = makes sense Example- You observe a man and a women walking down the street and they are both very nicely dressed. What are some possible inferences to where the two MAY be going????
7
Observation OR Inference? 1. On vacation we saw a volcano erupting. OBSERVATION- you would have to SEE to make that statement. 2. The boy and girl talking are dating. INFERENCE- just because they are talking doesn’t mean they are dating! 3. The brown block is made of wood. INFERENCE- just because its brown doesn’t mean its made of wood. 4. The boy that is crying is in trouble. INFERENCE- just because he is crying doesn’t mean he is in trouble! 5. The table feels rough. OBSERVATION- you would have to TOUCH the table to know how it feels.
