2. The C.C.C. was a work relief program for unemployed men ages 18-25. There were up to 200 civilian enrollees. In the camps they set up and lived in army tents and barracks. The C.C.C. had 300 possible types of work projects within 10 approved general classifications; 1.Structural Improvements: bridges, fire lookout towers, and service buildings 2.Transportation: truck trails, minor roads, and airport landing fields 3.Erosion Control: check dams, terracing, and veggie covering 4.Flood Control: irrigation, drainage, dams, ditching, channel work, and riprapping 5.Forest Culture: planting trees and shrubs, timber stand improvement, seed collection, and nursery work 6.Forest Protection: fire prevention, fire pre-suppression, fire-fighting, and insect and disease control 7.Landscape and Recreation: public camp and picnic ground development, lake and pond site clearing and development 8.Range: stock driveways and elimination of predatory animals 9. Wildlife: stream improvement, fish stocking, food and cover planting 10. Miscellaneous: emergency work, surveys, and mosquito control

4. 1.Structural Improvements: bridges, fire lookout towers, and service buildings. If you looked today, you could probably find bridges or buildings built by the C.C.C. < This is a picture of the Civilian Conservation Corps building a walkway or bridge. ^ This is a picture of a gazebo\shelter the C.C.C. had made.

5. 2. Transportation: truck trails, minor roads, and airport landing fields. Some of these transportation routes are marked as historic landmarks. It is fascinating how many of these things exist today. To your left is a picture of the C.C.C. working on a minor road. ^ Here is a picture of men working on a brick road.

6. 3. Erosion Control: check dams, terracing, and vegetable covering. Did you know? The C.C.C. were the ones who helped build the Hoover Dam. To your left is a little dam made by the C.C.C. The C.C.C. didn’t just check dams; they improved them, and made them. terracing ? What is terracing ? Verb Make or form (sloping land) into a number of level flat areas resembling a series of steps.

7. 4. Flood Control: irrigation, drainage, dams, ditching, channel work, and, riprapping riprapping What is riprapping ? Verb Strengthen with such a structure. To the left is a diagram of rip- rapping. Above is an example of riprapping.

8. 5. Forest Culture: planting trees and shrubs, timber stand improvement, seed collection, and nursery work. Think about it… your backyard could have a tree in it that was planted by the C.C.C. To your left is a picture of 2 C.C.C. men transferring a tree. Above is a picture of men planting trees in the forest. They would plant or “renew” (replace) the trees.

9. 6. Forest Protection: fire prevention, fire pre-suppression, fire fighting, insect and disease control. You may think some of these things might not be important to you but, during The Great Depression peoples’ lungs would get dust in them and other people would get severely sick. 10. 7. Landscape and Recreation: public camp and picnic ground development, lake and pond site clearing and development. Have you ever been to an older national park? If you have, the C.C.C. has probably been there and worked there before. C.C.C. workers in Acadia National Park, 1934. C.C.C. cabin in Mount Nebo State Park. The cabin to your right is still able to be found in Mount Nebo State Park.

11. 8. Range: stock driveways, and elimination of predatory animals. Elimination of predatory animals was very important because if there were too many, the animals could roam into the towns and kill chickens, cows, or even you! 12. 9. Wildlife: stream improvement, fish stocking, food and cover planting. Did you know? Some fishing lakes and rivers lost business due to fish stocking.
