3 Washington( 1789-1797) hoped for no parties but his cabinet brought out the tension between Jefferson as Secretary of State and Francophile, Narrow /limited interpretation of the constitution Hamilton as Secretary of Treasury and his Report on the Public Credit & the Report on Manufactures, elastic, broad interpretation Jefferson as VP to Adams who, with Madison, write the VA & KY resolves Adams as President who signs Alien & Sedition Acts Jefferson as President: 1801- 09 states rights, yeoman farmer, agrarian republican

4 War of 1812, against the British reflects the Jeffersonian Democratic Republican vision and values Madison President during the war Monroe, with the Federalists discredited and with the support from Clay and JQ Adams adopts the American system

Clay: All Jeffersonian – Democratic - Republicans 1828:Jackson vs. JQ Adams Democrat vs. National (D) Republican 1832: Jackson vs. Clay Democratic party is the party of the southern agrarian yeoman farmer but also the party of the immigrant. The Irish love Jackson for fighting the British at New Orleans and for being a proponent of the common man

6 1840 Van Buren vs. Harrison Whigs are the anti king Jackson party with values of the Federalists and National (D) Republicans. 1844 Polk vs. Birney vs. Clay The Democratic party becomes also the party of expansion which appeals to the other elements of the Jeffersonian Democratic Republican party

7 1856: What would the new 2 nd party be? The Xenophobic anti-immigrant Know Nothing American party or the anti spread of slavery, mix of the conscious Whigs, the Free soilers, and the more radical Liberty party who make up the new Republican Party

8 The birth of the (radical) Republican party 1860: Lincoln wins Radical Republicans in Congress are committed to freedmen 1877: Republican Hayes is willing to pull troops out of the south Republican party changes focus to support for industry, Democrats are still old laissez faire politics

9 Cleveland (1885-1889,1893-1897) Harrison (1889-1893) McKinley(1897-1901) Cleveland, 19 th century laissez faire, Democrat does nothing about the depression except repealing the SSPA and refuses to annex the Philippines Islands. McKinley personifies the evolved Republican party platform by supporting imperialism and providing support for big business

Progressive Presidents 1901 TR ( R ) Square Deal 1909 Taft ( R ) 1913 Wilson ( D )New Freedom and once president, more govt All believe in expanding the scope of the federal govt to improve the conditions of more citizens and limit the power of big business

11 1920s, 1950s, 1980s, 2000s Modern Republican Presidents believe in laissez faire economics, limited government, support of big business, and supply side economics Harding supports normalcy, Coolidge believes the business of America is business, Hoover supports the associative state, repeated by Eisenhower and Reagan and both Bush administrations. However Reagan and Bush are neocons that increase the deficit due to expanded foreign policy (A little reminder of Mckinley?)
