Steps for creating the PowerPoint project Start a new blank file. A) Start-up Window B) Next window for Blank Presentation PowerPoint Basics Sample Lesson Sample Poem Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

From the View menu, select Outline This view is best for entering text. Text boxes are automatically created. For slide one, type your poem’s title, then press Enter or Return for a new line and type “By” then your name.” Note: When starting a new line, a second slide was created, labeled as “2” Outline View PowerPoint Basics Sample Lesson Sample Poem Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

We want the credits on the same slide so insert the cursor next to your name then look at the buttons in the left margin. Clicking the right directional arrow merges and indents the credits with the title slide. This indenting is called “Demoting.” Doing the reverse will “Promote” or decrease an indent until a new slide is created. Start a new slide (Slide two). Promote if necessary. Enter entire poem onto this slide. PowerPoint Basics Sample Lesson Sample Poem Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

Slide View Click to the right of Slide 1. Next, from the View menu select Slide. Here we see the slide as it will be seen in a slide show. Slide view is good for graphics, animations, and layout. Remove a text box by clicking its border so that frame appears. Press delete cuts the box. OR, click on the border a second time and drag with your mouse to move it. OR, squares appear in the frame corners. Click and drag to resize. PowerPoint Basics Sample Lesson Sample Poem Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

Next, in the Edit WordArt Text box, enter the title. Use any of the format options, before clicking OK. Single click the WordArt to reformat appearance. 17 Background Colors Apply Design and Background both enable creation of background design. Apply Design is permanent. Background can be changed later. Background: Right click anywhere on the screen except on text and image frames. From the list, choose Background. Note: Apply Design was also a listed option. Sample Lesson Sample Poem PowerPoint Basics Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

Click the bar marked with a * and select Fill Effects. Note: the 2 apply buttons will display your designs when done. This offers many selections for backgrounds. Experiment with Preset colors first before seeing the other designs found under the four tabs. 19 Recording the Poem Record your poem. Then do a second recording explaining the connection of the clip art to the poem. Under the Insert menu, select Movies and Sounds, then Record Sound. Rename “Recorded Sound” with a related label. Click the red circle to begin recording. Speak in a clear voice. Click the square to stop, and OK when you are done. Make sure a microphone is plugged into the computer. Sample Lesson Sample Poem PowerPoint Basics Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

Animations Actions for Pictures and Text Pictures and words can move and make noise during a display or on a mouse click. Right click the clip art and select Custom Animation. A) Click the down arrow to select a movement that enhances the presentation. Click the preview button to evaluate the effect. B) Select a sound to go with the movement. Generally, using few is recommended. Or, use this instead of movement for purposes of verbal identification of a word or symbol. C) For text manipulation only. Sample Lesson Sample Poem PowerPoint Basics Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

Timing is Everything Click the Timing tab This effects when and order that animations occur. A) Animation Order Animated objects are listed here. The up and down arrows monitor order of effects. B) Any objects not yet animated may be selected from here. C) I prefer animations to occur automatically, rather wait for a mouse click. Especially student projects. Generally, more than zero seconds is too long of a wait for a project. Live presentations differ from these points. Sample Lesson Sample Poem PowerPoint Basics Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

Animating Sounds It is good to use animation order for sounds, otherwise the horn must be clicked for the sound to occur, which is useful for foreign language and ESL classes where one could click the word and listen to the pronunciation. Check “Play using animation order. The two options are self- explanatory. I prefer “Continue slide show” so that object fly in while the voice recording or noise takes place. “Stop playing” determines how long the recording will go. This usually factors for music. Remember to set-up timing under the Timing tab. Sample Lesson Sample Poem PowerPoint Basics Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

AutoPlay Student projects should run completely through without needing a mouse click. This requires that all animation are set for automatically, and that the slide show is rehearsed. To do the second step, under the Slide Show menu select Rehearse Timing. The slide show begins on the first slide, with this timing box present. Sample Lesson Sample Poem PowerPoint Basics Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

Repeat retimes the slide. The box pauses and continues the timing. The arrow is used to move on to the next slide. Generally click the arrow when the amount of time need for the slide has been reached. Clicking the arrow on the last slide will save the timing. You can then select Slide Show from the View menu to watch the presentation. Sample Lesson Sample Poem PowerPoint Basics Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

List of Other Functions Slide Sorter View Use this to see all slides at once, and to click and drag slides to different spots in the order. Hyperlinks Highlight text and click from the Insert menu Hyperlink. Type the url address in the top box, beginning with http://, or click the browse button next to the second box to set up a link to another slide or file such as from Word or Excel. This also works when right clicking on an object and selecting Action Settings. Sample Lesson Sample Poem PowerPoint Basics Note: Slide Show, under the view menu, demos (or runs) presentations.

AutoShapes from the Drawing Toolbar (View: Toolbars: Drawing) Make images 3D, use funky shapes, and used preprogrammed image links for non-linear navigation of the PowerPoint file. The Action Settings option for objects does the same. Slide Transition (Slide Show menu: Slide Transition) Another way to set show to run automatically. Also includes transitions for between slides similar to object animations. The settings listed in this diagram is recommended for automatic transitions.
