PowerPoint for High School A demonstration of how to construct an effective presentation for any class By John Smith ID #210999 Each page will have instructions on what changes to make to this presentation. These will always be in purple 12 pt Arial font. After completing each activity, delete these instruction boxes by clicking on the outside edge of the box and pressing “delete”. Change the name on the title slide to yours. Just click inside the box and then click where you want to edit. Be sure to delete the first instruction box at the top of this page and then delete this one, too. Use your “Page Down” key to go to the next slide Use the Zoom tool at the lower right of your screen to adjust the size of the slide for ease of working. Before we begin, you should page through all of the slides contained in this presentation and then return back to this one (Slide1) to begin your work

o The Text is like the body of a written report. Avoid too many words; this should not replace an oral presentation. The slide should contain only the main points. “Bullets” can help organize your main points. o Adding some colors and graphics can make plain text more interesting. PowerPoint – Text Change the color of the title of every slide to a dark color (other than black) that coordinates with your chosen slide background. Click inside the box and then left click and hold to highlight the entire title. Select a font color from the Home menu (the letter A with a color bar underneath). Adding a background color can greatly improve the appearance of the presentation. Move the cursor to an empty corner of the background, and right click. Select “Format Background”. Select “Gradient fill” and under “Preset colors”, select a light colored background that black colored fonts will show up well with. At the bottom of the dialogue box, select “Apply to All”

PowerPoint - Illustrations o Including illustrations can make your presentation easier to understand. Over-using or not clearly explaining illustrations can confuse your audience. Paste illustration #1 in this box. 1.Go to the second to the last page of this presentation, tap the correct illustration and then right click. Select “copy”. 2.Go back to this page, tap inside of this box and right click, selecting “paste”. 3.Tap on and use left click to move the image to a corner of the box. 4.To resize it to fit, left click “tap” the illustration, then left click “grab” it from the corner and “pull” to adjust until it is the right size. 5.From the Format screen, give the illustration a black “Shape Outline”. Place illustration #2 here. Remember, if you make a mistake, Ctrl-Z will back you up through your last several steps. Write a short description, or caption, for the illustration above. Replace this text with it. Caption 1 Replace this text with Caption 2

PowerPoint – Charts and Graphs o Many projects that PowerPoint can be used for will include charts and graphs. Always include a caption for every chart or graph to explain its purpose in the presentation. Caption 4Caption 3 Paste illustration #3 in this box. Remember to write a short caption in the space provided below to describe each illustration. Be sure to remove the titles “Caption 3”, “Caption 4”, etc. Most illustrations or pictures should always have some sort of caption unless they are just for decoration. Place illustration #4 here.
5
PowerPoint - Photos o A “Google Image Search” can provide many useful photos to add to you presentation or shoot some of your own and add them in Caption 6Caption 5 Place illustration #5 here. For the captions below, try to add a border and light color to the caption box after you write the text. Use “Shape Fill” and “Shape Outline” from the Home screen. Place illustration #6 here.

PowerPoint – Slide Show o There are a variety of custom animations that are available to make your presentation more dynamic. See what your presentation looks like so far. Go to the first slide and left click the icon at the lower right part of the screen that looks like a podium (Slide Show View). Tap any key to step through the presentation so far. Stop at this page and tap “Esc” when you are done. Your presentation looks good, but…it could use a “little something”!
7
PowerPoint - Animations o Apply an Animation from one slide to the next This is called Slide Transition. You’ll find it on the “Animations” screen. Pick a transition option and then use “Apply to All” (this button is located to the right of the menu bar.) Go to your first slide and run the presentation again to see how it has changed. Looking better! Now add a custom animation. 1)Select “Custom Animation” from the top left of the Animations screen. 2)Tap the middle of the large text area above (a dash line should appear around the box). 3)Select “Add Effect” from the Custom Animation window to the right of this screen; choose “Entrance” and use the “Fly In” option. 4)Modify the “Start:” to be “On Click” (tap the small down arrow to the right of the white box). 5)Stay on this page, run the presentation slide show and see how the animation has changed. 6)You can now reveal one line at a time (this can help keep people’s attention!) 7)CAUTION: Do not over animate! Too much is distracting and doesn’t look like college level work.
8
PowerPoint – Insert a Page o From the Home screen, select “New Slide”. A new page will appear or be “inserted” after this one. On that page, copy and paste the “Final Exam Review Guide” text box from the last slide of this lesson Create a title in a new title box for the slide Add a new slide background (different from the rest of the presentation) Add a fill color for the title box and give it a clear border Place a border around the final exam review, set the fill color as white Animate the text so that the review guide reveals one line at a time Insert a picture, drawing, clipart or cartoon that fits the theme of the page somewhere on the slide (try Google Image Search). Careful; you are graded on how well the image applies to your page. Inappropriate images will deduct extra points. Animate the illustration to appear after the text is complete

Pictures, illustrations, and charts Illustration 1 Illustration 2 Illustration 5Illustration 6 Illustration 4 Illustration 3 BEFORE YOU FINISH: Your final presentation should be 9 pages. Your file name should look like this one: 1-SmithJ-PowerPointDemo …but be sure you use YOUR class section number, YOUR last name and first initial, and that all of the capitalization and punctuation is the same as the sample. Always avoid spaces in a file name. You should save your file twice: 1 st – Save as a PowerPoint Presentation I recommend saving it in the 1997-2003 format This is for you to keep on your USB drive 2 nd – Save as a PowerPoint Show This allows any viewer to see the presentation, even if they don’t have the PowerPoint program. A person only viewing the presentation cannot edit it. Submit this file to the FS105 folder in the Output directory of the C: drive. This is the teacher’s copy. FINAL STEPS: Did you remember to delete all of the purple text dialog boxes from your presentation? After all of the images on this page have been used and your slide show is complete, delete this page and the following review guide page from your presentation. Save you work again as a PowerPoint Presentation (USB) and as a PowerPoint Show (FS105 folder) Tap the slide you want to delete on the mini-slide viewer to the left and hit “Delete”. If you make a mistake, use Ctrl-Z.
