UNINETT IPv6 Test Network UNINETT IPv6 Test Network Trond Skjesol Trond.Skjesol@uninett.no NORDUnet 2000 28 - 30 Sep Helsinki
2
Agenda " A stable network for application research. " A separate test bed for network research. " IPv6 backbone and participants. " Project activities on the test network. " Other activities. " References. 1
3
A stable network for application research. " UNINETT is the network provider for the academic and research network in Norway. " A stable production network. " A stable research network for application research with extra capacity, less than 30% load, to major institutions (about 30).
4
UNINETT/NORDUnet Where and how: http://drift.uninett.no/kartg/last/uninett/norden Backbone STM1 to STM16 in near future.
5
A separate test bed for network technology research " An IPv6 backbone based on ATM PVPs sponsored by Telenor Net, 10 - 25 Mbps. Will be replaced by STM-1. " 4 native IPv6 backbone nodes: " Tromsø (UiTo); " Trondheim (NTNU and UNINETT); " Oslo (UiO, NR, Thompson CSF); " Kjeller (UNIK, Telenor R&D, FFI).
6
Areas of Interest " Promote network research at the institutions " IPv6 and Diffserv Deployment " studying practical issues " Research " looking for Ipv6/Diffserv benefits to existing work " looking for new IPv6-powered solutions
7
Project activities. " UNINETT, IPv6 backbone. " To study backbone construction and management " UNINETT, Lab. " To study applications and network services.
8
UNINETT, IPv6 backbone. " 4 Cisco 4700 router running latest IOS IPv6 Beta based on IOS 12.1. " BGP4+ tunnel peering with 6bone and NTT. " Native peering with QTPv6. " Interopability tests.
9
UNINETT, lab. " Tunnel Broker, lets anyone connect workstations via tunnels. Some 30 tunnels " 6to4, automatic tunnels " DNS (bind 9.0.0), IPv6 enabled, A6 and DNAME rec. " Web Cache, accelerator " OpenLDAP " IPv6 enabled workstations " Multihoming " Wireless LAN
10
QTPv6 " Quantum Test Program, test bed network on TEN- 155 " IPv6 addressing policies " Multihoming " DNS " Applications " Interoperability " Initial report delivered
11
IPv6 Host plattforms " IPv6 Solaris 7 and 8 " Redhat 6.x " FreeBSD 3.4 and 4.0 " Windows NT and 2000 " Compaq IPv6 stack for Alpha/Tru64 " IBM AIX 4.3
12
IPv6 Router plattforms " Telebit TBC2000 " Cisco IOS 12.1 " FreeBSD 4.0 (KAME stack) " Zebra (GNU router project) " 3Com Netbuilder II, software v11.3 " Hitachi NR60 (Gated)
13
IPv6 Applications " Apache web serve " MSIE web browser " plus Mozilla and Lynx " Sendmail 8.10 " IRC, Mbone tools, INN,... " Quake
14
IPv6 Addressing " IPv6 addressing scheme -2001:0620::/35 assign to ISP " though it is really a /29 allocation - registries want only 8K routes in DFZ " How to assign to HE Institutions? - One /48 per site? - Implies 65K networks at (K ites - but "small customer" can get a /48?
15
IPv6 Multihoming " Will be more common in IPv6 " Host sees Router Advertisements - auto-configures prefix from each router " May have multiple IP addresses - so may the target host " Need to choose src/dst address pair " Interfaces may also (dis)appear
16
IPv6 Renumbering " Wish to switch ISP - need to use different IP prefix " Router renumbering protocol - in relative infancy - new DNS methods to support it - need to avoid hard-coded IP addresses - may also be used to deprecate a link
17
IPv6 DNS " Running BIND 8.x - DNS lookups IPv4 transport only - IPv6 records are AAAA records " Running BIND 9.0.0. - native IPv6 transport support - A6 and AAAA records for IPv6 " DNAME
18
IPv6 Quality of Service " 20-bit flow label, 8-bit traffic class " RSVP - QoS per connection - e.g. Lancaster media client/server " DiffServ - QoS by packet type/tag - e.g. Thomson IP edge device
19
Transition/integration tools " Ipv4/IPv6 interwoeking - NAT/PT and Ultima (BT) - Dual stack " easier if you have enough IPv4 addresses - Proxy methods " Also available - DSTM, 6to4,...
20
Project activities, cont. " UiTo, computer science department. " Native IPv6 only lab. " IPv6 DNS, FTP proxy etc. (KAME) " IPv6 NAT. " Native IPv6 only lab. PASTA, different aspects of private machines in distributed systems, in cooperation with Univ. of Pisa. " Vermicelli (VERy MobiLe Clients Enhanced for Link Level Interaction ). Integration of mobile machines into a static IPv6 infrastructure.
21
Projects, UiTo PASTA
22
Project activities, cont. " NTNU " IPv6 enabled test network on campus. " UNIK " Distributed Multimedia Systems " FFI " NATO related experiments. " NR " IMIS, Infrastructure for Multimedia Applications in seamless Networks.
23
Project activities, cont. " UiO " MMCL; Multimedia Communication Lab. " Wireless Mobile IPv6, (Weman).
24
Conclusion - technical " Ipv6 core specs are done " Host and router support hardening fast - Microsoft, Cisco and Sun on board " Interoperability problems less common " Interesting stuff is on the way - IPv6 Multicast, IPsec, QoS - IPv6 in wireless applications
25
Conclusion - operational " Address allocation policies important - Multihoming will offer benefits - Renumbering has potential " Auto-configuration is powerful " 3GPP may provide the IPv6 kick-start " Key IPv6 benefit may be scalability
26
Other activities. " Quantum Test Program Diffserv by TEN-155. " BOF on testbeds Friday 1600 room 24.
