1. Introduction ESA’s Space Environment and Effects Section (TEC-EES) proposes, coordinates and manages many R&D activities relevant to space weather. Examples of past activities include: The ESA space weather programme feasibility study The ESA space weather pilot project (including SWENET) Space Environment Data Analysis Tools (SEDAT) Space Environment Information System (SPENVIS) Standard Radiation Environment Monitors (SREM) And more… The SSA Preparatory Programme relies on existing expertise in TEC for technical developments and R&D activities in the space weather domain. ESA’s R&D programmes Depending on maturity, different R&D programmes are used: • General Studies Programme (GSP) Hmm, I’ve got an idea… Does it make sense? Does it work in principle? Call for proposals every 2 years; ESA mandatory programme. • Technology Research Programme (TRP) Let’s develop this further… I wanna see this working in the lab! year cycle; different Service and Tech Domains; mandatory programme. • General Support Technology Programme (GSTP) Let’s build the real thing… And get it ready to be flown in space! Announcement of Opportunity issued every year; optional programme. Other domain specific R&D programmes have relevance to space weather, e.g., ARTES (Telecom), GNSS Evolution Programme (Satnav). Summary ESA’s Space Environment and Effects Section (TEC-EES) has main responsibility for R&D in space weather modelling and effects on spacecraft (except thermosphere and ionosphere – partly covered by OPS-G). Several planned activities are critical in support to the SSA preparatory programme and its next phase. Four recently approved GSTP5 activities for SSA instrument development, modelling and infrastructure for which the ITTs are in preparation. Several GSTP5 proposals relevant to SSA will be submitted to Member States for funding in September 2010. Plan for more GSTP5 and lower TRL R&D activities is in preparation. Harmonisation at ESA level is performed through TECNEC and SEENoTC. Harmonisation with relevant FP7 activities is foreseen (complementarity requirement stated in the call, possibility of meetings at technical level). Community expertise to undertake GSP, TRP, GSTP activities and ideas for future proposals are welcome.
