Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809. His family moved to Indiana when Abraham was seven. He did chores and read books.

When Abraham was 21, he moved to Illinois. He worked hard. Abraham ran a store and he worked at a post office. He also cut wood for fences.

Abraham married Mary Todd in 1842. They had four sons. The family lived in Springfield, Illinois.

After he become a lawyer, Abraham worked in politics. In 1846, he was elected to the U.S. congress. Abraham became president in 1861.

In the 1800s, many people in the south owned slaves. Slaves were not able to choose their jobs or where they lived. They worked for no money. Abraham wanted to make slaves free.

The Civil War began in 1861. the south wanted to be a separate country. The North fought against the South. They fought about slavery and states’ rights.

In 1963, Abraham signed a paper called the Emancipation Proclamation. The paper helped free many slaves. In 1865, the Civil War ended.

Some people did not like Abraham’s ideas. Jon Wilkes Booth shot Abraham at a play on April 14 th, 1865. Abraham died the next morning.

Abraham helped change the United States. He helped end slavery. Many people remember Abraham Lincoln as a great speaker. He kept the United States together as one country.
