Conspiracy Theory Total of 10 conspirators John Wilkes booth was assigned to assasinate Abraham Lincoln Lewis Powell was assigned to kill secretary of state William Seward David Herold accompanied Powell George Atzerodt was assigned to assassinate Vice President Andrew Johnson

The plan The plan was to kill the top three most important people in the federal government At first, Booth wanted to kidnap the President but then decided to kill him. The conspirators wanted revenge for the south after the loss of the Civil War which ended just hours before Lincoln’s Assassination

Lincoln President and his wife attended a play at fors theatre on April 18, 1865 Wilkes booth entered the box where they were sitting and shot Lincoln in the back of the head Later Booth jumped from the balcony and broke his leg He escaped the capitol and traveled to a tavern in Maryland where he got supplies

Lincoln continued… He later traveled to doctor Samuel Mudds house where his leg was “set” or tended too Lincoln was later taken to a house across from the theatre where he eventually died the next morning On April 26 th Booth and his accomplish were found hiding in a barn in Virginia

Continued… Booth wouldn’t surrender so they set fire to the barn As he fled he was shot and killed His accomplice Herold surrendered and was later tried and taken into federal custody Lincoln was the first American president to be assassinated

William Seward Seward had a serious carriage accident and was bedridden Lewis Powell talked his way into the Seward house Powell was stopped on the stairs by Seward’s son, Powell attacked ran into the secretary of states room and stabbed Seward multiple times

Andrew Johnson George Atzerodt was assigned to assassinate Vice President, Andre Johnson On April 14, he checked into the same hotel as Andrew Johnson, with his real name. At 10 O’clock, when he was supposed to advance upon the Vice President, he built up courage by drinking at the hotel bar. He never got any further, and spent the next several hours walking aimlessly around Washington.

Samuel Mudd He was a physician who cured John Wilkes Boothe’s ankle even though he did not know he was in involved in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln He was sent to a life’s sentence for conspiring with Booth He was pardoned by president Johnson and released from jail in 1869

Convictions and trials After the assassination the government arrested hundreds of people but released them due to a lack of evidence The government did try 8 people accused of conspiracy Trial began May 10, 1865 and lasted until June 30th

Imprisonments Dr. Samuel Mudd, Samuel Arnold, Michael O’Laughlen, and Edman Spangler were all charged of conspiracy and proven guilty Everyone was sentenced for life except for Edman Spangler, who was charged with six years Every one’s sentence was revoked in 1869 by Andrew Johnson

Hangings About 1,000 people attended the hangings Mary Surratt, 42, was the first woman to hang by the US Government. Also, Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt were the others hanged. Today, a tennis court is at the site of the scaffolds where the victims were hanged.

Conspirators Four of booths co- conspirators were convicted of being a part of the assassination They were executed on July 7, 1865

After Math of Assassanation Most of the country was in grief after the assassination and the Union army swore vengeance on the south. Cannons and shots were fired almost every half hour of day and night for a week. Even people in the south who didn’t like President Lincoln mourned his death
