Life Leading up to politics Born in Kentucky February 12, 1809 where he lived for only about 7 years Abe spent the rest of his childhood on a farm in Indiana He attended school for less than a year, gaining most of his education by reading books In 1831 he left his family and moved to New Salem, Illinois where he began to study law

Outcome of War Southern General Lee surrenders to the Union Emancipation Proclamation: Document written by Lincoln stating all slaves were free Freed hundreds of thousands of slaves 13 th Amendment: Abolished slavery in the United States. Passed by the Congress on January 31, 1865 14 th Amendment: Gave citizenship rights to former slaves. Lincoln-Douglas Debates In 1858 Abraham Lincoln battled Stephan Douglas in a intense 7 debates for a seat in the Senate Douglas supported the idea that people should chose to support or prohibit slavery on their owned property Lincoln battled back saying slavery was immoral and wrong An event Lincoln spoke about was the Dred Scott v. Other Achievements Lincoln created a national banking system with the National Banking Act in 1863 Resulting in a standardized currency In 1834 Lincoln was elected to the state legislature aligned with the Whig party In 1847 Lincoln was elected to the US House of Representatives as a member of the Whig party Won reelection shortly before being assassinated
